McMakler apparently lays off more than 100 employees

According to a media report, the start-up is laying off 100 employees. It is already the second large wave of layoffs within a few months.

Berlin-based real estate startup McMakler is laying off 100 employees for operational reasons and letting up to 100 temporary contracts and probationary periods expire. This is reported Gründerszene citing an internal mail and meeting held at the company Monday morning. Before the layoffs, nearly 1,000 people worked at the startup, which was founded in 2015. Already in July, 120 employees had to leave.

McMakler was valued at 800 million euros as recently as January and could become a unicorn. Since 2015, around 250 million euros have flowed into the start-up, which wants to make the real estate industry more digital. For example, the company offers tools to coordinate appointments and create apartment exposés. The start-up also says it employs more than 450 of its own real estate agents. As a result, McMakler said it generated 92 million euros in revenue last year, a 70 percent increase compared to 2020.

The company did not give concrete reasons for the layoffs, according to Gründerszene. A spokeswoman referred to the difficult market situation to the magazine. Insiders speak in the report of failed cost-cutting measures in the summer and a market environment that is currently deterring investors.
