The startup Spark e-Fuels is developing a new technology to make the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) scalable and cost-efficient.

Berlin, February 12, 2025 - Berlin-based startup Spark e-Fuels has closed a pre-seed financing round of 2.3 million euros. The round was led by Nucleus Capital, accompanied by Zero Carbon Capital, IBB Ventures, Chemovator, Voyagers.io and 1.5° Ventures. Experienced business angels also participated, including former executives from Shell, Lufthansa, BP, Siemens Energy and McKinsey.

New technology for cost-efficient e-fuel production

With growing pressure on the aviation industry to reduce its emissions, Spark is developing a scalable and cost-effective solution for the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The technology uses renewable energy more efficiently than conventional methods by decoupling production processes and adapting to fluctuating availability of wind and solar power. This eliminates the need for expensive hydrogen storage and complex grid infrastructures.

For sustainable aviation fuel to become the new norm, production must be scalable and economically competitive. Our technology makes this possible through the flexible integration of renewable energies

Mathias Bösl, CEO and co-founder of Spark e-Fuels

Investment in pilot plant and market launch

The fresh capital will be used to build the first e-fuel pilot plant and to expand the team in order to accelerate the market launch of the technology. In addition to aviation, Spark's technology could also play a key role in the chemical industry. As the second largest industrial contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, the sector is under enormous pressure to become carbon neutral by 2050.

We were particularly impressed by Sparks' ability to integrate renewable energy into chemical production. This solution is not only important for SAF, but also for many other industries.

Isabella Fandrych, General Partner at Nucleus Capital

Spark e-Fuels was also awarded the UpLink Sustainable Aviation Challenge Award at the World Economic Forum 2024 and received an additional €300,000 in funding, further underlining the startup's innovative strength.
