With a new pop-up office space in Hannover-Vahrenwald, techfactory Hannover is launching operations at its first dedicated location. The Hannover Region’s startup and technology center offers startups flexible office space and support for their growth. Three of the four available office units have already been leased. Long-term plans call for two larger innovation hubs in Garbsen and Hannover’s Nordstadt district.

After several years of planning, techfactory Hannover has opened its first premises at Hüttenstraße 22B. The location is intended not only to provide workspaces for young companies but also to serve as a hub for networking with other founders, established companies, and supporters from the regional innovation ecosystem.

At the grand opening, techfactory Managing Director Gordon Hünies welcomed representatives from politics, business, and the startup scene. Lower Saxony’s Minister for Europe and Regional Development, Melanie Walter, described the opening as “the beginning of something truly great.”

The first startups have already moved in

The new location features four office units, three of which have already been leased to young companies. The space offers flexible work options and is designed to facilitate collaboration among the resident teams.

Among the first tenants is DiB GmbH, which specializes in indoor drone inspections. Morgenraum, a company focused on urban development, has also moved in.

Kollektiv siebzehn, a social agency dedicated to the design of and social interaction in public spaces, is also represented.

The diverse fields of activity among the first tenants demonstrate that techfactory is not exclusively geared toward traditional software or technology startups. Rather, the goal is to bring together companies with a variety of innovative business models and development approaches.

Collaboration with the Local Startup Scene

An important aspect of the location is its integration into the existing Hüttenstraße neighborhood.

In the immediate vicinity is the Hüttenstraße Initiative, which utilizes former freight forwarding warehouses on the industrial site. Various creative projects and young companies have already established themselves there.

The goal is to create a connection between the two facilities that will particularly benefit founders at different stages of development.

Benjamin Grudzinski of the Hüttenstraße Initiative sees this as an opportunity to provide young companies with a low-barrier entry point initially. As their projects evolve, they could then take advantage of the services offered by the neighboring techfactory.

For techfactory, the focus is on providing support along the path from a business idea to a market-ready company. In addition to workspaces, networking, expert guidance, and access to business partners will play a central role.

Larger Location in Garbsen Planned for 2029

However, the opening in Hannover-Vahrenwald is only the first step in establishing the techfactory.

A much larger project is taking shape with the ONE TechCampus Garbsen, located in the immediate vicinity of the Mechanical Engineering Campus at Leibniz University Hannover.

A new technology park with five flexible production, research, and development buildings is set to be built on a site spanning approximately 62,000 square meters.

The developer is the asto Group, which developed the project in collaboration with the Region Hannover and the City of Garbsen.

The groundbreaking is scheduled for the first half of 2027. Completion of the first construction phase is planned for early 2029.

techfactory will be the technology park’s main tenant and is expected to occupy more than 4,600 square meters of space there.

Connecting Research, Startups, and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

An innovation ecosystem is to be created in Garbsen that is specifically geared toward collaboration between young technology companies, student startup teams, and established industrial firms.

In addition to office space, the plans include workshops as well as flexible rooms for meetings and workshops. A so-called “learning arena” will facilitate events and conferences.

The proximity to Leibniz University’s mechanical engineering campus offers the opportunity to more closely link scientific research with industrial applications.

Small and medium-sized enterprises will also be able to set up operations on the site. Student housing and a parking garage are also planned.

The goal is for the technology park to go beyond a traditional startup incubator and cover various phases of business development.

Another Innovation Hub in Nordstadt

In parallel with the project in Garbsen, techfactory is developing another location on the grounds of the former Nordstadt Hospital in Hanover.

An innovation center focusing on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and biotechnology is to be established there.

By 2034, a total of ten hospital buildings that are no longer needed are to be gradually converted into office and laboratory space for student entrepreneurs, technology-oriented startups, and research-oriented companies.

The pop-up location on Hüttenstraße, which has now opened, also serves a preparatory function. It will be used to test usage concepts and technical equipment that could later be implemented at the larger locations.

Gradual Development of a Regional Startup Network

With the opening in Hannover-Vahrenwald, the techfactory is emerging for the first time as a concrete workspace and development hub for young companies.

While the Hüttenstraße location initially provides a modest amount of office space, the planned facilities in Garbsen and Nordstadt are designed to accommodate a significantly larger number of startups and technology-oriented companies.

The expansion will take place over several years. While the first spaces are already in use, the larger locations are scheduled to be developed gradually starting in 2029 and continuing through 2034.

This creates an opportunity for the Hanover region to more closely integrate the various phases of startup development: from the first workspace for young teams, through collaboration with research institutions, to the development of market-ready technologies for industry and small and medium-sized enterprises.
