Trade Republic Announces Free Retirement Savings Account
The Berlin-based neobroker Trade Republic plans to offer a government-subsidized retirement savings account with no ongoing account fees. The execution of regular savings plans will also be free of charge. In addition, the fintech company has announced a selection of ETFs with no product fees. Customers will be able to benefit from government subsidies of up to 540 euros annually , as well as additional incentives for children and young professionals. However, the retirement savings account is particularly important for entrepreneurs and the self-employed—more on that at the end of the article.
With the retirement savings account, Trade Republic is expanding its offerings to include a long-term form of private retirement planning. The company aims to simplify access to government-subsidized capital market investments and, in particular, reduce the costs associated with long-term wealth accumulation.
The announcement is linked to the reform of private retirement savings in Germany. Trade Republic is adopting a model in which customers can invest in securities over a long period of time while simultaneously benefiting from government subsidies.
Up to 540 euros in annual subsidies
According to Trade Republic, the new retirement savings account provides for government subsidies of up to 540 euros per year. In addition, parents will be able to receive a subsidy of up to 300 euros per child. A one-time bonus of 200 euros is planned for young professionals just starting their careers.
Tax benefits are also part of the announced model. Contributions are expected to be tax-deductible within the framework of statutory requirements. During the savings phase, investment income within the retirement savings account can be reinvested without being subject to ongoing taxation.
However, the subsidy amounts mentioned are maximum amounts. Which subsidies are actually granted in individual cases depends on the legal requirements and the respective contributions. The tax treatment of future payouts is also crucial for the overall assessment of retirement planning. A tax-advantaged savings phase does not mean that the subsequent pension will generally be paid out tax-free.
No Account Fees and Free Savings Plans
Trade Republic plans to offer the retirement savings account from the outset in a version without ongoing custody fees. In addition, the regular execution of savings plans will be free of charge. With this option, the bank is waiving two types of fees that can impact the total return when building wealth over the long term.
Ongoing costs play a particularly important role when investment horizons span several decades. Fees not only reduce the capital immediately available for investment but also its potential future performance. With this free offering, Trade Republic therefore aims to appeal specifically to investors who regularly invest smaller amounts toward their retirement savings.
ETFs from BlackRock, DWS, and Vanguard with no product fees
In addition to free custody account management, Trade Republic has announced another unique feature. Several dozen ETFs from BlackRock, DWS, and Vanguard are to be offered without product fees over the long term. This would allow the company to reduce costs for selected funds that are typically incurred directly within the ETF’s assets.
The announcement does not specify which specific ETFs are included in this offer or how the cost coverage will be implemented technically and contractually. It also remains unclear for now whether and under what conditions additional costs may arise, such as for special transactions, a securities account transfer, or during the subsequent payout phase.
The announced fee-free status explicitly refers to the free offering option and the services provided under it.
Retirement Planning as a Long-Term Growth Market
For Trade Republic, the new retirement savings account represents an expansion of its existing business model. The neobroker initially positioned itself by offering low-cost access to securities trading and regular savings plans. Long-term wealth accumulation is now one of the platform’s core use cases.
The company points out that millions of people already invest regularly through its platform. A government-subsidized retirement savings account would combine this existing savings plan approach with government subsidies and tax benefits. For Trade Republic, this also opens up the opportunity to retain customers on the platform over particularly long periods of time.
Largest Advertising Campaign in the Company’s History
To accompany the product launch, Trade Republic is announcing its most extensive advertising campaign to date. The campaign is set to run on television, radio, and billboards. According to the company, the campaign will focus on real customers who are already investing regularly for their financial future.
Trade Republic aims to raise public awareness of private retirement planning through this campaign. At the same time, the campaign is likely intended to establish the new retirement savings account early on as a cost-effective alternative within the emerging market for government-subsidized capital market investments.
Cost-free access alone isn’t the deciding factor for retirement planning—a special case for entrepreneurs!
With its announced retirement savings account, Trade Republic is focusing particularly on ongoing costs. The combination of free account management, fee-free savings plans, and selected ETFs with no product fees could make the offering attractive to long-term investors.
However, other factors are crucial for a comprehensive comparison with other retirement savings products. These include the specific eligibility requirements for subsidies, the selection of investable securities, potential restrictions on capital availability, and the tax treatment of future payouts.
Minimum Security for Existing Assets!
For founders and the self-employed, however, the retirement savings account may be the most exciting news. Perhaps, as a side effect, this represents the current government’s greatest support for startups. Failure is part of the life of a founder, and 90% of startups fail within the first 10 years. Most young entrepreneurs put all their eggs in one basket, overwork themselves, and often find themselves kicked out of the statutory social security system after one or two years.
Until now, the only alternative was the Rürup basic pension, which—due to high product costs—yielded no return at all or even resulted in real losses for savers. For this reason, many have been saving money in their own accounts, but these savings were not tax-deductible and, more importantly, did not count as exempt assets. If the company goes under, the savers’ entire savings are often at risk as well. As things stand now, contributions to the AV portfolio count as exempt assets and are therefore not threatened by bankruptcy or unemployment. This is a real advantage, even if the returns are subject to taxation in old age.
Capital market investments are also subject to price fluctuations and can result in losses. With this announcement, Trade Republic is positioning itself early in the market for the new government-subsidized private retirement savings plan. How competitive the offering is overall will depend on the final product terms and the legal framework. This is not investment, legal, or tax advice provided by Startbase or the author.
