Berlin's ConTech Kuro has closed a funding round of 10 million euros. The round is led by UVC Partners, with Foundamental, Realyze Ventures, and helloworld also participating. Founded just last November 2024, the company is developing an AI platform that consolidates project documents from general contractors, identifies inconsistencies, and aims to make knowledge from past construction projects usable for future projects. Twelve companies are already using Kuro, including Goldbeck, Köster, Geiger, Riedel, and Implenia.

Six of the 20 largest general contractors are among its clients

Kuro focuses on a challenge that grows with the scale of construction projects: general contractors must reconcile large volumes of plans, building specifications, bids, and other documents. If this information contradicts itself and the error is not detected in time, it can lead to additional costs and problems on the construction site.

Kuro aims to automate this process. According to the startup, six of its twelve existing clients are already among the 20 largest general contractors in the German-speaking world.

AI Integrates Plans, Bids, and Rules

The platform first consolidates the various project documents into a common data model. Kuro then overlays this with the individual set of rules specific to each construction company. Within this framework, components, inspection criteria, and contract units can be defined, for example. The software then reconciles plans and construction specifications, identifies potential discrepancies, and assesses risks.

In addition, Kuro can enrich building components within 3D models with additional information and process requests for proposals and bids from subcontractors. This approach thus goes beyond a simple AI search within documents. If corrections are made or rules are added, they are retained within the system and can be automatically applied to future projects.

90 fewer hours of work per bid

Kuro is already seeing measurable results in cost estimation. According to the company, the platform saves customers approximately 90 hours of work per bid. Seventy percent of users report that Kuro found information they would otherwise have overlooked. The company does not provide independently verified figures on these savings in its press release.

For Kuro, however, cost estimation is just the starting point. The platform is set to be gradually expanded to cover additional administrative processes used by general contractors. UVC Partners cites procurement, accounting, and compliance, among others, as potential areas of application.

Knowledge Should Remain Within the Company

One element of the business model is the preservation of experiential knowledge. In traditional construction projects, some of this knowledge depends on individual project managers, estimators, and other employees. Consequently, once a project is completed, only a limited amount of that knowledge can be transferred to the next one.

General contractors that succeed in turning their knowledge into products become less dependent on individual employees as they grow.

Lea Scherer, CEO of Kuro

Kuro aims to turn this into a structured set of rules that can be reused independently of individual people.

The founders come from alcemy and Capmo

Kuro was founded in November 2024 by Lea Scherer and Jonas Minkler. Both already have experience in the German ConTech scene and previously held leadership positions at the construction software companies alcemy and Capmo. Kuro now employs 16 people in Berlin.

With UVC Partners, the company is now adding an investor who, according to the founders, has known them for several years—even from before Kuro was founded. Foundamental also brings an investor specializing in the construction and real estate industries to the round.

From Cost Estimation Tool to AI Foundation

For Kuro, the next step in its development is likely to be transforming its successful cost estimation applications into a more broadly applicable platform for general contractors. Given its high-profile early clients, the conditions for this are in place. At the same time, the startup must demonstrate that the promised reductions in time and errors can be replicated across different companies, project types, and processes.

If the expansion into procurement, accounting, and compliance is successful, Kuro could evolve from a specialized costing tool into a central data and knowledge layer for construction companies. The new round of financing totaling 10 million euros is intended to accelerate precisely this expansion.
