AMD Acquires World Labs for $8.2 Billion

U.S. chipmaker AMD plans to acquire World Labs, a startup led by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li. The all-stock transaction is valued at approximately $8.2 billion and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. With this acquisition, AMD is expanding its capabilities beyond traditional AI hardware and bringing a specialized research team focused on spatial intelligence, robotics, and so-called “physical AI” into the company.

AMD and World Labs have entered into a binding agreement for the acquisition. The purchase price will be paid entirely in stock.

Upon completion of the transaction, World Labs is expected to continue its research on AI models. Co-founder and CEO Fei-Fei Li will simultaneously join AMD’s executive leadership team. She will serve as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist and report directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su.

For AMD, the acquisition is thus more than just a technology purchase. The company is integrating an entire AI research team and its scientific leadership into its own organization.

World Labs Develops Spatial AI

San Francisco-based World Labs focuses on so-called spatial intelligence models. These models are designed to generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive three-dimensional environments from text, images, and videos.

In addition, the company is working on technologies for robotic learning and simulation.

In doing so, World Labs is addressing an area that could become increasingly relevant for the next generation of AI applications. While large language models primarily work with digital information, spatial models are designed to capture and simulate physical environments and ultimately support the interaction of AI systems with the real world.

Potential applications range from robotics and autonomous systems to simulations and virtual worlds.

AMD Aims to Better Align Hardware with AI Models

For AMD, however, the focus isn’t solely on World Labs’ technology itself. Through the acquisition, the chipmaker aims to better understand how future AI models and their computing infrastructure requirements will evolve.

“Building compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models evolve,” explains AMD CEO Lisa Su.

World Labs’ research is expected to influence AMD’s future hardware, software, and system roadmaps accordingly.

This is particularly relevant because AI workloads are becoming increasingly diverse. In addition to the training and inference of large language models, reasoning, robotics, simulation, and physical AI are gaining importance—and in some cases place different demands on computing power, memory, and software.

Fei-Fei Li to Become Chief Scientist at AMD

With Fei-Fei Li, AMD is also gaining one of the most renowned scientists in modern AI research.

The Stanford professor is best known for her work on ImageNet, a large-scale image dataset that played a key role in advances in computer vision. At World Labs, she and her team are focusing on the next stage of development for visual and spatial AI.

Once the acquisition is complete, she will serve as AMD’s Chief Scientist to strengthen the connection between AI research and the development of future compute platforms.

World Labs is expected to continue its research on AI models.

From Chip Manufacturer to Broader AI Provider

Strategically, the acquisition aligns with AMD’s efforts to position itself in the AI market beyond just processors and GPUs. The company already offers CPUs, GPUs, networking technology, and software for AI infrastructure.

With World Labs, a significantly stronger research and modeling capability is now being added.

AMD argues that close collaboration between model development and compute infrastructure will help better align future systems with new AI applications. At the same time, the company emphasizes its approach to an open AI ecosystem.

A Billion-Dollar Bet on the Next Generation of AI

With a transaction value of approximately $8.2 billion, World Labs represents a significant strategic acquisition for AMD. It is noteworthy that the value appears to stem less from an established mass market business than from research expertise, technology, and the expected importance of spatial AI.

The deal is thus also a bet on which workloads will consume a large portion of AI computing power in the future. Should robotics, simulation, and physical AI indeed become key application areas, World Labs’ expertise could be directly incorporated into the development of future AMD systems.

Until then, however, the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026.
