Focused Energy raises 240 million US dollars for laser fusion
Laser fusion company Focused Energy has closed a Series A financing round of 240 million US dollars. According to the company, this is the largest fully secured Series A round in the global fusion sector to date!
The capital raises the Darmstadt-based company to become one of the leading players in the international race for commercial nuclear fusion. The approach is based on laser fusion, the only technology to date with a scientifically proven net energy gain.
This is a major step on our way to making Hessen a leading location for cutting-edge research and development in laser-based nuclear fusion. This is a very good day for Biblis and for Hesse.
Boris Rhein, Minister President of Hesse
The investors include RWE, the Federal Agency for Leap Innovations SPRIND, the European Innovation Council Fund, Beteiligungs-Managementgesellschaft Hessen, Futury Capital and the previous lead investor Prime Movers Lab from the USA.
Record round for a new energy industry
The financing round is significantly oversubscribed and brings together investors from Germany, Europe and international markets. It also includes strategic industrial partners and potential customers for fusion energy. The aim is to establish a new industrial value chain for fusion energy in Europe. Germany is to play a central role as a location for development and subsequent commercialization.
As energy demand is growing and emissions need to be reduced, fusion energy can play a key role in building a more sustainable energy future while creating high-quality skills and skilled jobs in Europe.
Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation
Industrialization of laser fusion
The funds will primarily be used for the further development of the technology and the establishment of industrial supply chains. A particular focus is on the Biblis site in Hesse, where the first laser fusion power plant is to be built on the site of a former nuclear power plant.
At the same time, the company is expanding its international production and development infrastructure and driving forward clinical and technical testing and validation processes for the technology.
Strategic industry partner RWE
With RWE, Focused Energy has gained a key industrial partner that will provide the Biblis site and contribute regulatory and infrastructural expertise.
It is an important signal that the federal and state governments are working together to drive forward development in order to realize a commercial fusion reactor in Germany. RWE expressly supports this goal
Dr. Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE AG
The company sees this as a decisive step towards accelerating the industrialization of fusion technology in Europe.
Europe in the global merger race
Investors and political players see fusion technology as a strategic future industry of comparable importance to semiconductors or aviation.
Those involved particularly emphasize the combination of scientific excellence, industrial infrastructure and political support in Germany and Europe.
Focused Energy is thus positioning itself as one of the central players in the global competition for the first commercial fusion energy.
