The Finnish startup Ambio has closed a seed funding round of 5.1 million euros. The round is led by the European venture capital firm b2venture. Montis and existing investor Lifeline Ventures are also participating. The Helsinki-based company is developing an AI-powered procurement platform for recycled plastics, with the specific aim of improving quality control and supply reliability for industrial customers. The capital will be used to fund international expansion and the expansion of the company’s material portfolio.

Recycled plastics are playing an increasingly important role for European industrial companies. In addition to regulatory requirements and sustainability goals, there are also economic advantages to using them. At the same time, sourcing them is often significantly more complex than purchasing newly produced plastics.

This is exactly where Ambio comes in. The company aims to simplify the procurement of recycled plastics through a combination of structured material data, quality controls, and artificial intelligence.

Quality Variations Complicate Procurement

While virgin plastics are generally offered according to defined specifications, the properties of recycled materials can vary considerably.

Quality depends, among other things, on the source materials from which the plastics are derived, how they were processed, and the properties of the specific batch.

This creates a procurement risk for industrial buyers. Whether a recycled material is actually suitable for their own production often becomes clear only after extensive testing or when it is used in manufacturing.

In addition, important information regarding material properties, suppliers, and previous processing results is often incomplete or scattered across different systems.

This not only makes it difficult to select suitable materials but also to establish reliable, long-term supplier relationships.

AI Aims to Identify Suitable Recycled Materials

Ambio is therefore developing a procurement solution designed to cover the entire purchasing process. This ranges from searching for suitable recycled plastics to quality testing and organizing long-term deliveries.

The platform records material properties, supplier data, prices, and results of past transactions in a structured format.

Based on this data, an AI-powered matching system works to connect industrial buyers with suitable materials.

According to Ambio, each additional transaction expands its database. The information collected is intended to help gradually improve material recommendations, price quotes, and the processing of future orders.

In the long term, the company aims to be able to assess as early as possible whether a recycled plastic meets the requirements of a specific production process.

CEO Tommi Bergström sees this as an essential prerequisite for the increased use of recycled materials. While buyers of virgin materials usually know exactly what properties to expect, there is often still uncertainty when it comes to recycled plastics.

Ambio Takes Responsibility for the Supply Chain

The business model goes beyond simply acting as an intermediary between buyers and sellers.

Ambio acts as the responsible supplier to industrial customers. The company organizes procurement, inspects materials, and handles quality assurance within the supply chain.

To this end, recycled plastics are qualified based on samples, documentation, and established testing procedures.

The goal is to provide customers with a single point of contact who not only provides information about available materials but is also responsible for the processing and quality of deliveries.

This approach distinguishes Ambio from a traditional digital marketplace, where suppliers and buyers are merely brought into contact with one another.

The combination of trading operations, quality data, and AI is intended to create a more reliable procurement infrastructure for the European recycled plastics market in the long term.

Data Set as a Potential Competitive Advantage

From the perspective of lead investor b2venture, a key advantage of the business model lies in its continuously growing data set.

Since Ambio is directly involved in procurement and quality assurance, the company can collect information on material properties and actual delivery results.

This data, in turn, feeds into the further development of the AI-powered matching of materials to customer requirements.

Mathias Ockenfels, a partner at b2venture, sees this as the foundation for a long-term competitive advantage. He emphasizes that the key lies in the combination of proprietary quality data, responsibility for the supply chain, and an AI system that learns from completed transactions.

The company is led by CEO Tommi Bergström. Elmo is cited as another key member of the team.

Expansion into Additional Markets and Types of Plastics

Ambio plans to use the 5.1 million euros to expand its business internationally and incorporate additional types of polymers into its procurement solution.

The funding will also help further develop the data set and AI-powered processes.

The long-term goal is to make the procurement of recycled plastics as predictable as the procurement of conventional plastic raw materials.

For European industrial companies, this could also become relevant in terms of supply security. Greater use of recycled materials can help reduce the demand for fossil raw materials used in the production of new plastics.

The funding announcement does not specify how many customers Ambio already serves, what trading volume is processed through the platform, or how reliably the AI can predict material properties.

Scaling a Data-Driven Trading Model

With this seed funding, Ambio aims to lay the groundwork for expanding its procurement solution to additional industrial buyers and suppliers.

The challenge lies in both technological advancement and operational management. The more diverse the range of recycled materials traded through the platform, the more important standardized quality checks and reliable delivery processes become.

Ambio believes that the combination of AI, material data, and supplier accountability can reduce the uncertainties that have historically plagued the procurement of recycled plastics.

Whether this will result in a procurement infrastructure scalable across Europe will depend, in particular, on how reliably material quality and delivery capacity can be ensured even as trading volumes increase.
