Sono Motors has taken the next step on the road to series production of an electric car powered solely by solar energy.

Fans of the Sion solar car can rejoice: A new prototype is to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) technology trade fair in January 2021. Sono Motors plans to have a second generation of prototypes ready by next winter.

"For the first time, we have now installed parts in the Sion that are intended for series production," says Denis Azhar from Sono Motors. The Munich-based start-up has been working on the development for a year. According to founder and CEO Jona Christians, the coronavirus pandemic made work more difficult, but did not change the idea of fighting the climate catastrophe with a car powered entirely by solar energy.

According to the company, it was only at the beginning of the year that 53 million euros were raised with the help of a large crowdfunding campaign. 75 percent was raised from reservers of the Sion solar electric vehicle, 19 percent from existing and new investors and around 6 percent from loans and donations.

Sono Motors plans to put the solar car into series production and probably sell it for around 25,000 euros. A challenge to competing companies working on cars with solar technology.
