Tumbleweed Secures 6.9 Million Euros for Research in Microgravity

Tumbleweed, based in Vienna, has announced the country's largest SpaceTech seed funding round to date. Following the successful launch of Oasis Alpha, three more missions are scheduled to follow in 2027.

The Austrian space tech company Tumbleweed has closed a seed funding round totaling 6.9 million euros. The round was led by venture capital investor Pact. Other investors include Vanagon, PROTOTYPE, EWOR, as well as various international investors and business angels. The company also lists Koro Capital, ABCapital, Dutch Operator Fund, and rule30 as supporters.

With this investment, Tumbleweed aims to advance the industrial use of microgravity. The company is pursuing the idea of no longer limiting research and experiments in microgravity to just a few large space programs, but rather making them accessible to smaller research institutions and companies as well.

Weightlessness offers particular opportunities, especially in medical research and biotechnology. Under conditions of near-zero gravity, biological and physical processes that are influenced by gravity on Earth can be studied. However, such experiments in space have so far been associated with high costs, long lead times, and limited capacity.

First Commercial Satellite Developed in Just Nine Months

About four months ago, Tumbleweed demonstrated that it can already successfully deploy its technology in space. At that time, the company launched “Oasis Alpha”—which it claims is Austria’s first commercial satellite—into Earth’s orbit.

The short development time is particularly noteworthy. According to Tumbleweed, it took the company just nine months to build the satellite. This means development was completed about five times faster than is typical in the industry.

There also appears to be significant commercial interest. All available capacity for the mission had already been sold out a year before launch. For Tumbleweed, this is an initial indication that the use of microgravity could establish itself as a commercial service.

The business model is based on offering research institutions and companies opportunities to conduct experiments in orbit without having to develop or operate their own satellites.

Three Missions Planned for 2027 and a New Satellite Platform

With the additional 6.9 million euros, Tumbleweed now plans to finance its next phase of growth. Three more space missions are scheduled for 2027. According to the company, the available payload capacity is already being increasingly booked by research laboratories in the fields of medicine and biotechnology.

At the same time, the startup is working on the next generation of its satellite platform. Oasis Beta is scheduled to be deployed for the first time in 2028 and will offer a key new capability: the return of experimental samples to Earth.

So far, the focus has been on conducting experiments in space. The ability to subsequently examine samples in detail in laboratories on Earth could open up additional fields of application and make the platform attractive to other research institutions.

According to the company, the necessary hardware is already being developed and tested in its own laboratories.

With this funding, Tumbleweed is positioning itself in a growing European SpaceTech market. While many young space companies focus on satellite communications, Earth observation, or transport services, Tumbleweed is banking on the commercial use of the unique conditions in orbit.

Whether this will result in a scalable business model in the long term remains to be seen with upcoming missions. The capacity already sold and the interest from the research community provide initial indications of this. With Oasis Beta, the company could also take an important step toward establishing microgravity as a regularly accessible research infrastructure.
