Intrepid Growth Partners Launches $525 Million Fund for AI Companies
The new AI investor, Intrepid Growth Partners, has announced its official launch and, at the same time, completed the final closing of its first fund, totaling $525 million. The growth investor, with offices in Toronto and London, aims to invest specifically in AI companies that are already commercially successful, with a particular focus on Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as the U.S. and Europe. Intrepid has already made nine investments, including PhysicsX from London and StackAdapt from Toronto.
$525 Million for the First Fund
Intrepid Growth Partners was founded in 2023 by Mark Machin, Mark Shulgan, and Ajay Agrawal. With the completion of its fundraising, the investment firm is now officially going public. The first fund totals $525 million and is backed by more than 80 limited partners. These include institutional investors, sovereign wealth funds, and family offices.
Notable investors include Temasek, the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, the British Business Bank, Export Development Canada, and the Business Development Bank of Canada. This gives Intrepid a substantial capital base right from the start for a new fund.
Focus on AI Companies with Commercial Traction
Intrepid targets AI companies that have already demonstrated commercial success and are on the verge of their next phase of growth. The team isn’t simply looking for companies that use artificial intelligence to make existing processes more efficient. The focus is on business models that can fundamentally transform entire industries or value chains with the help of AI.
“We start by developing a vision of how AI could redefine an industry over the coming decade, and work backward from there,” explains co-founder Mark Shulgan, describing the investment strategy. Accordingly, Intrepid pursues a concentrated investment approach with a comparatively high level of conviction in individual investments.
Canada and the United Kingdom
Geographically, Intrepid is particularly focused on the connection between Canada and the United Kingdom. From the investor’s perspective, both countries boast a strong research landscape and a large pool of AI and engineering talent. In addition, the team is seeking investments in the U.S. and other European markets.
Intrepid sees a funding gap, particularly when it comes to the growth of European and Canadian technology companies. Promising AI companies should not only receive capital but also be supported in building international market positions. To this end, the investor contributes not only growth capital but also networks and operational support.
PhysicsX and StackAdapt Already in the Portfolio
Although Intrepid is only now announcing its official launch, the fund is already active. According to the investment firm, a total of nine companies are currently in its portfolio. These include, among others, the London-based deep tech company PhysicsX and the Canadian ad tech company StackAdapt.
PhysicsX develops AI technologies for engineering and the physical industry. Among other things, the company aims to use artificial intelligence to transform how machines, products, and infrastructure are developed and operated. Intrepid is thus not focusing exclusively on traditional software applications. Its investment thesis explicitly includes industries where AI is deeply integrated into industrial processes and physical systems.
Investors and AI Researchers Found Intrepid
The composition of the founding team also underscores the connection between institutional capital and AI research. Mark Machin previously served as President and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, one of the world’s largest institutional investors.
Mark Shulgan previously headed the Growth Equity division at the Canadian pension fund OMERS. The third founder, Ajay Agrawal, is a professor at the University of Toronto and focuses in particular on the economic impacts of artificial intelligence.
Agrawal argues that AI drastically reduces the cost of making predictions above all else. As a result, complementary skills and resources—such as human judgment, proprietary data, distribution, and the redesign of workflows—become more valuable.
Turing Award Winner Richard Sutton as Advisor
In addition to the investment team, Intrepid has built a network of scientists, entrepreneurs, and former executives designed to support its portfolio companies. Among the senior advisers is Richard Sutton, one of the pioneers of reinforcement learning and recipient of the 2024 Turing Award. Also part of the network are MIT professor Sendhil Mullainathan, former British Air Force Chief Sir Mike Wigston, and Shopify President Harley Finkelstein. Portfolio companies will be able to draw on these experts for assistance with technological, operational, and strategic issues.
The Next Phase of the AI Boom
With its first fund, Intrepid is positioning itself in a phase where the AI investment market is becoming increasingly differentiated. While significant capital has flowed into models, infrastructure, and early-stage applications in recent years, the focus is now shifting more toward which companies can actually develop sustainable business models based on technological advancements.
Intrepid aims to build on this by funding companies that have already demonstrated initial commercial success. The investment firm assumes that the major winners of the AI transformation will not come exclusively from Silicon Valley. Canada and the United Kingdom, in particular, are expected to be key focus areas, though investments in the U.S. and continental Europe are not ruled out.
