European VC IRIS leads a funding round in which deep tech startup DGG raises €4 million for its real-time 3D technology. RapidCompact, an automated 3D visualization software, has already convinced well-known customers such as adidas, OTTO and Shopify.

Darmstadt, Germany - Deep tech startup DGG (Darmstadt Graphics Group) has closed a €4 million funding round for the development of its RapidCompact software. Led by European VC IRIS, existing investors as well as business angels also participated in the Darmstadt-based company.

"We see great potential in the application of 3D content - in e-commerce and beyond. DGG makes the application of 3D simple and scalable and thus represents an essential building block for a successful 3D infrastructure.

Thorben Rothe, Partner and Head of Early Stage IRIS

DGG was born after eight years of research at Fraunhofer IGD (Institute for Computer Graphics Research), where the founders Max Limper, Miguel Sousa, Julian-Alexander Neagu, Sebastian Wagner and Felix Limper met. They realized that while there were well-developed technologies for rendering 3D content, there was still a manual and laborious process required to optimize this technically challenging content. The key problem was the lack of properly formatted 3D content for real-time 3D and XR applications.

With their core product, RapidCompact software, the founders dramatically simplify the optimization and processing of 3D models. Enterprises and platform partners can integrate the RapidCompact software and API into their backend infrastructure to deliver thousands of optimized 3D models for various real-time 3D and XR applications in a matter of hours.

RapidCompact actually works as easily as drag-and-drop uploading videos to YouTube. Our goal is to make 3D technology accessible to all retailers and product developers via an API.

Well-known customers such as Adidas, Crate & Barrel, OTTO Group, Shopify and Adobe have already shown interest in the technology. In the last two years, RapidCompact alone has created over two million optimized 3D models for these and other partners.

The funding round will help DGG drive its growth and further develop its research and development activities, according to Max Limper, co-founder and CEO of DGG. In addition, the team is already working on a new product that automatically converts "offline" CGI assets into real-time 3D formats. This innovation is scheduled to be unveiled at the SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles in August and could overcome a hurdle to broader adoption of 3D technology in retail.
