Forschungszentrum Jülich and eleQtron develop modular quantum supercomputer with support of 21 million euros

eleQtron and Forschungszentrum Jülich write future history: Development partnership for modular quantum supercomputer launched in NRW - a milestone for the deep tech industry!

Düsseldorf, Jülich, Siegen, 25 March 2024 - Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Siegen-based company eleQtron have entered into a strategic technology partnership to realize the "Development Partnership Ion Trap Quantum Computer in NRW (EPIQ)". The aim of this partnership is to develop a modular quantum supercomputer that can be closely integrated into the infrastructure of the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC).

Funding by the state government of NRW

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia is supporting the project with funding of around 21 million euros. This globally unique project has emerged from the "EIN Quantum NRW" network and aims to bring a quantum computer developed and manufactured by researchers from NRW to series maturity by 2027.

Fields of application and potential in industry

eleQtron CEO Jan Leisse sees great potential for the use of the quantum computer in industry. The development partnership with Forschungszentrum Jülich represents an important step towards making quantum technologies ready for the market for industrial applications.

The collaboration between Forschungszentrum Jülich and eleQtron marks a major step forward for the partners in the field of deep tech. Both are pioneers in the field of quantum computing and are contributing their expertise to the development of the modular quantum supercomputer.

Further development plans

The aim is to deliver a finished quantum computer by 2024 and further expand it by 2026. The aim is to create a hybrid system of supercomputer and quantum computer that promises new insights and holds considerable potential for innovation.

The strategic technology partnership between Forschungszentrum Jülich and eleQtron underlines the capabilities of North Rhine-Westphalia as a high-tech location in the field of quantum computing. The funding from the state government and the commitment of both partners promise to make an important contribution to the development of quantum technologies for industrial applications.
