Alawyer Launches European Legal AI with 1.5 Million Euro in Funding
Artificial intelligence is also increasingly transforming the legal industry. Alawyer, an Austrian startup, is now launching with the goal of making legal information and legal research more accessible to individuals, businesses, and experts alike. Instead of a solution limited to individual countries, the aim is to create a European legal AI that simplifies access to legal knowledge across national borders.
Legal Research Modeled After Human Experts
Unlike many generative AI systems, which provide quick answers but whose sources often remain unclear, Alawyer relies on a transparent legal methodology. The platform conducts research based on official sources such as laws, court decisions, legal literature, and public registries such as the land registry and commercial register.
In doing so, the AI follows established legal research methods and presents the results in a clear and transparent manner. The goal is to provide even people without legal training with low-threshold access to complex legal issues. At the same time, the startup explicitly emphasizes that Alawyer is not a substitute for legal or tax advice. Rather, the AI’s results are intended to serve as a well-founded guide and should be reviewed by attorneys or tax advisors as needed.
Developed in collaboration with approximately 200 experts
According to the company, the platform was developed in close collaboration with around 200 experts from the legal industry. The developers therefore do not view the AI as competition for traditional legal professions, but rather as a tool that can support the daily work of lawyers and make it more efficient.
Use cases include, among other things, searching public registries, analyzing contracts, and structuring complex legal issues. Users can also forward the researched information, along with its sources, directly to their legal advisors.
Launch in Eleven European Countries
At launch, Alawyer already supports legal sources from eleven European countries. In addition to Austria and Germany, the service currently covers France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Availability in these markets is set to expand further in the coming months, before additional EU countries follow by the end of the year.
In doing so, the company is deliberately pursuing a pan-European approach. As a European startup media outlet, we know that cross-border work is rare and often difficult, especially when it comes to legal matters. Should the service gain traction, we ourselves would have a use case or two for it.
Flexible Pricing
Alawyer also takes a different approach to its business model than many established AI providers. Instead of flat-rate monthly subscriptions, the company relies on a credit-based usage system. Users thus pay only for queries they actually run. A free starter quota is designed to make access even easier. For businesses, special subscriptions, budgeting features, and APIs for integrating the technology into existing software solutions are also available. Additionally, Alawyer plans to launch mobile apps for iOS and Android.
European Funding Supports Growth
Alawyer has already secured approximately 1.5 million euros in funding for the development of the platform. This support comes from sources including the European Union and the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance.
With its focus on transparency, traceability, and European legal jurisdictions, Alawyer is positioning itself in a market that is on the verge of fundamental change due to the rapid advancement of generative AI. The key question here is likely whether trustworthy, source-based legal AI can establish itself in the long term as an indispensable tool for citizens, businesses, and legal professionals.
