Swiss Deep Tech Report 2026: Why Switzerland Is Emerging as a Global Deep Tech Powerhouse

ETH Zurich and EPFL Lausanne are solidifying their roles as Europe’s leading incubators for deep-tech startups. With record funding, a strong AI and robotics scene, and growing international interest, Switzerland is emerging as a global deep-tech hotspot.

When people talk about the future of artificial intelligence, robotics, semiconductors, or space exploration, their attention often turns to the United States or, increasingly, to Asia. However, the new Swiss Deep Tech Report 2026 shows that a comparatively small country in Europe has long played a key role in the technologies of the future: Switzerland.

The report, produced by Deep Tech Nation Switzerland, Founderful, Kickfund, Startupticker, and Dealroom, paints a picture of a country that ranks among the world’s leaders in deep tech investments, research, and startup creation.

More Deep Tech per Venture Euro Than Any Other Country

Perhaps the most remarkable statistic in the report: Around 63 percent of all Swiss venture capital now flows into DeepTech companies. This puts Switzerland in first place worldwide, even ahead of China and the U.S.

While many countries are increasingly investing capital in software and platform models, Switzerland is consistently focusing on science-driven technologies with long development cycles and high barriers to entry. These include, among others, artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum technologies, space exploration, medical technology, and semiconductors.

Switzerland also ranks at the top in terms of per capita investment. With approximately $1,470 in DeepTech investment per resident, the country ranks first in Europe and is among the top three globally.

Universities as Drivers of Innovation

A key factor in this success is the close integration of research and entrepreneurship.

According to the report, ETH Zurich and EPFL Lausanne are now considered Europe’s leading universities for the creation of new deep-tech spin-offs. Year after year, companies emerge there that transform research findings into marketable products. Many of these startups now remain in Switzerland rather than moving abroad at an early stage. This is creating a growing ecosystem of talent, capital, and industrial expertise.

AI, Robotics, and Future Computing as Growth Drivers

The field of artificial intelligence is developing particularly dynamically. Already, one in four newly founded Swiss deep-tech companies now originates from the AI or machine learning sector. At the same time, Switzerland has the highest density of AI researchers worldwide.

The country is also setting new standards in robotics. Since 2020, 3.5 times as many VC-funded robotics startups have been founded per capita in Switzerland as in the U.S., and even five times as many as in the United Kingdom. A similar dynamic is evident in the field of future computing. Switzerland has an exceptionally high density of patents and benefits from its strong microelectronics and sensor systems industry.

Record Year for Swiss Deep Tech

This trend is also reflected in the funding figures. Since 2015, the capital invested in Swiss deep tech companies has increased roughly fivefold. In 2025, the industry reached a new record level of approximately 2.6 billion U.S. dollars.

At the same time, international interest is growing. Major global venture capital funds are now actively seeking investments in Switzerland. Whereas investors used to need to be convinced of the location’s potential, they are now increasingly coming on their own initiative.

International Investors Dominate Growth Financing

Despite this impressive development, the report also highlights a challenge. In funding rounds exceeding 100 million US dollars, 88 percent of the capital already comes from international investors.

On the one hand, this underscores the global appeal of Swiss companies. On the other hand, it reveals a gap in domestic growth capital. Especially in later stages, additional national investors could help retain more value creation in the country over the long term.

Europe’s DeepTech Role Model?

The report’s authors see Switzerland at a decisive turning point. Never before have so many ambitious founders been working simultaneously on globally relevant technologies.

With more than 1,500 venture-funded deep-tech startups, a strong scientific foundation, and growing international capital, Switzerland could finally establish itself in the coming years as one of the world’s most important hubs for future technologies.

The Swiss Deep Tech Report 2026 makes it clear that Switzerland is no longer just a successful research hub. It is increasingly becoming a place where scientific breakthroughs are translated into global technology companies, making it one of the most exciting deep-tech ecosystems in the world.

The Authors and Link to the Study

The Swiss Deep Tech Report 2026 was jointly produced by the organizations Deep Tech Nation Switzerland, Founderful, Kickfund, Startupticker.ch, and Dealroom.co. The study is thus backed by some of the key players in the Swiss startup and venture capital ecosystem—ranging from investors to market research and data experts to independent startup media outlets. The authors include Alexandre Meldem (Deep Tech Nation Switzerland), Alex Stöckl (Founderful), Wanja Humanes (Kickfund), Stefan Kyora (Startupticker.ch), and Lorenzo Chiavarini (Dealroom.co). The study aims to provide investors, founders, and policymakers with a data-driven overview of the evolution of the Swiss deep-tech landscape.
