LILY Labs Emerges from Stealth Mode and Secures Funding from Mätch VC

The German German cloud infrastructure startup LILY has closed a new round of funding and is making its technology publicly available for the first time. Mätch VC is joining as an investor in the company founded by Milan Wiedemann and Leon Kaiser. No details have been disclosed yet regarding the amount of the funding round or a potential valuation.

With this investment, LILY aims to drive the development of a fundamentally different cloud infrastructure. The startup is challenging established components of modern cloud architectures. Virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes, and extensive configurations are set to largely disappear from software operations.

Mätch VC investor Jan Beisswenger describes the startup’s goal as correspondingly ambitious: LILY aims to rebuild the cloud stack, eliminating the complexity that has accumulated over the years through additional infrastructure layers.

In conjunction with the funding announcement, LILY has made its platform publicly available for the first time. Developers can initially use it to deploy Next.js applications, among other things.

LILY Aims to Radically Simplify Cloud Infrastructure

Technologically, LILY does not position itself as just another tool within existing cloud architectures. Instead, according to the company, the platform operates below the container layer and immediately above the physical hardware.

Applications run as WebAssembly in an isolated runtime. There is reportedly no traditional orchestrator, scheduler, or cluster. Scaling, monitoring, routing, and recovery are designed to be largely automated.

In this way, LILY aims in particular to reduce the operational overhead associated with running modern software today. According to the startup, compute consumption can be reduced by up to 90 percent compared to traditional architectures. This figure is provided by the company.

Scaling Is Supposed to Happen Automatically

Another approach concerns the scaling of applications. LILY does not intend to scale up entire applications, but only those components that actually require additional capacity. Unneeded program components are not intended to remain permanently in memory. The company also relies on automation in the event of failures. Failed units should be restorable based on their last saved state. At the same time, the architecture provides for redundant processes running on different machines.

LILY thus promises developers an infrastructure where teams can focus more on their actual code, while traditional cloud tasks increasingly fade into the background.

Funding Meets First Public Product Launch

The funding round thus also marks the transition to the next phase of the company’s development. Backed by Mätch VC’s investment, LILY is introducing its product to a broader public for the first time.

The amount of capital the startup raised and whether other investors besides Mätch VC are involved were not disclosed. What is clear, however, is the company’s strategic direction. LILY does not merely aim to simplify Kubernetes, containers, or existing cloud offerings, but rather to render as large a portion of this technology stack as possible obsolete.

Whether this approach can hold its own against established cloud infrastructures remains to be seen following the public launch. In any case, with funding secured and the product now available, LILY is entering the crucial phase of market validation.
