Exobiosphere Receives One Million Euros in Government Funding for Space Biotech Platform

One million euros and no additional equity stakes. Exobiosphere is receiving the maximum JEI grant available in Luxembourg and plans to use the funds to scale up its space biotech platform internationally.

The Luxembourg-based space biotech company Exobiosphere has secured one million euros in non-dilutive funding. The funding comes through the Jeune Entreprise Innovante (JEI) program of the Luxembourg Ministry of the Economy. The capital will primarily be used for commercial expansion, team growth, and scaling the company’s proprietary platform for automated biomedical experiments in microgravity.

For Exobiosphere, this funding means one thing above all: the company is receiving additional growth capital without having to give up any further equity.

One million euros without dilution

The JEI grant is aimed at young, research-intensive companies with high growth potential. One of the requirements for receiving support is an innovation certificate from Luxinnovation. The program can co-finance up to 70 percent of a company’s estimated funding needs over a maximum period of three years. The upper limit is one million euros. Exobiosphere is thus utilizing the maximum possible grant amount.

The government support is not intended to replace private capital. Rather, the program is aimed specifically at innovative companies that have already raised private capital and subsequently need to finance their transition to the next phase of growth.

Exobiosphere Aims to Accelerate Commercial Expansion

With the additional funds, the company intends to strengthen its operational structures and, in particular, expand its international business development and marketing activities. At the same time, the company plans to further scale its proprietary orbital high-throughput screening platform. Exobiosphere utilizes microgravity as a unique research environment for drug development and biomedical research.

According to the company, the platform can conduct more than 2,000 automated experiments within a single mission. The target audience includes pharmaceutical and biotech companies, as well as research institutions that wish to use microgravity for their drug discovery efforts.

“This funding comes at exactly the right time and makes a real difference for a company at our stage.”

Kyle Acierno, CEO and Co-Founder of Exobiosphere

It will enable Exobiosphere to expand its commercial activities, strengthen its team, and make the technology accessible to more pharmaceutical and biotech partners worldwide.

From Research to the Commercial Market

The funding follows several financing and growth milestones at Exobiosphere. Just recently, the company was selected for the seventh cohort of the CASSINI Business Accelerator. The six-month European program offers, among other things, business coaching, access to investors, and support for international expansion. Upon successful completion, Exobiosphere will also receive an equity-free voucher worth 75,000 euros.

Previously, the company had already received a contract from the European Space Agency worth 200,000 euros. In addition, there is the 1.4 million euro Gravity-AI research project in collaboration with the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, as well as a $1 million investment that Exobiosphere won at the “Meet the Drapers” startup competition. This has now resulted in a funding mix consisting of private equity, research projects, public contracts, and non-dilutive grants.

Luxembourg is funding the next phase of growth

Such financing can be crucial, especially for deep-tech and biotech companies. Long development cycles and high research costs mean that companies often have to invest substantial sums before technologies can be scaled commercially. Non-dilutive grants are therefore particularly attractive. They extend financial flexibility without requiring founders and existing investors to give up additional equity stakes.

For Exobiosphere, the focus is increasingly shifting from technological development toward commercialization. The million-euro grant is explicitly intended not only for research and product development, but also for sales, marketing, operational structures, and international expansion. Consequently, the key question in the coming months will be how successfully Exobiosphere can translate the scientific and technological interest surrounding microgravity research into a scalable business with pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
