Mk2 Biotechnologies closes seed financing deal

The Munich-based start-up has raised several million euros in a seed financing round. In autumn, the company will move into a biotechnology incubator.

Pure peptides can play an important role in cosmetics, agriculture and food markets - and Mk2 Biotechnolgies wants to make this happen. Now the Munich-based start-up has received several million euros in its seed financing round. The round is led by deep tech investor Occident, with Primecrowd, Seedblink and business angels also in the mix.

"The key to our process is that we have been able to remove the existing bottlenecks of established technologies," says founder Sebastian Mangold, describing the gap his company fills. This is because peptides are already used today, but are often not pure or very expensive. Mk2 Biotechnolgies offers the amino acid chains as a substitute for, for example, preservatives in food or antibiotics in animal breeding at prices suitable for mass production.

The Munich-based company will move to the Innovation and Start-up Centre for Biotechnology in Martinsried in autumn to expand its team and is looking forward to cooperating with the other companies that are also located there: "We expect to exploit the relevant synergies," said Mangold.

He is one of the three founders of Mk2 Biotechnolgies, along with Konstantinos Antonopoulous and Marco Giuman. In a pre-seed financing round, the Zeidler Research Foundation and research programmes participated.

Now the trio has also convinced investors: "With the technology platform and know-how that the mk2 team brings to the table, the company is in an excellent position for further development. We are very much looking forward to working with this motivated team in the future," says Cédric Barra from Occident about the investment.
