Nia Health Partners with AbbVie Germany on AI-Powered Atopic Dermatitis Care

Nia Health, a spin-off from Charité, has already developed Germany's most widely used atopic dermatitis app. The "AI Severity Classifier" is designed to help doctors assess the severity of the condition more objectively in the future.

The Berlin-based health tech company Nia Health and AbbVie Germany will collaborate on the further development of digital, AI-powered care for people with atopic dermatitis. Since July 2026, AbbVie has been supporting the further development of the care offering, while scientific responsibility remains entirely with Nia Health.

The collaboration focuses on digital applications that document the course of the disease between doctor’s appointments and, with the help of artificial intelligence, are designed to enable a more objective assessment of the severity of the condition.

AI Is Intended to Support Doctors

Atopic dermatitis often progresses in flare-ups and can change on a daily basis. While patients experience these changes continuously, treating physicians typically only gain sporadic insights during office visits.

The “Nia” app, developed by Nia Health—which the company claims is Germany’s most widely used atopic dermatitis app—enables patients to document the progression of their condition in everyday life. This is intended to help patients better prepare for doctor’s appointments and enable more informed treatment decisions.

A key development project is the so-called “AI Severity Classifier.” The AI system analyzes photos of affected skin areas that patients take with their smartphones and assesses the severity of the condition based on established clinical rating scales. The AI serves solely as a support tool; the medical assessment remains the responsibility of the treating physicians.

Integration into Charité Planned

The AI Severity Classifier is currently being integrated into the hospital information system (HIS) at Berlin’s Charité. In the long term, this should allow for the standardization of severity levels and, in some cases, enable them to be recorded in the home setting. The goal is to reduce the documentation burden, improve the comparability of clinical assessments, and simultaneously create a high-quality data foundation for research and patient care.

Real-World Data for Better Treatments

In addition to supporting individual care, the use of the app generates anonymized real-world data. This data provides insights into the actual course of the disease outside the doctor’s office and shows, for example, which symptoms are particularly burdensome for patients in their daily lives or how changes in treatment affect them.

Nia Health uses these insights to further develop its digital medical devices and continue to improve care for people with atopic dermatitis.

Charité Spin-off Focuses on Digital Dermatology

Nia Health was founded as a spin-off from Charité and develops digital medical devices for chronic skin conditions. Through this collaboration, the company gains a strong partner from the pharmaceutical industry, while AbbVie expands its activities in the field of chronic inflammatory skin conditions to include digital care solutions.

At the same time, the collaboration demonstrates how artificial intelligence is increasingly finding its way into medical care—not as a substitute for medical decisions, but as a tool for more precise diagnostics, better monitoring of patient progress, and more personalized therapies.
