SweGaN Raises an Additional $14 Million
The Swedish DeepTech company SweGaN has closed a Series B funding round totaling 14 million U.S. dollars. The funding round was led by Thisbe AB, North Ventures, and existing shareholders. The Linköping-based company plans to use the capital to expand its production capacity and accelerate the development of the next generation of its GaN-on-SiC materials.
SweGaN describes this as an “up round,” in which the company’s valuation has increased compared to the previous financing round. In total, the company has raised $41 million to date.
Semiconductor Material for 5G, Data Centers, and Defense
SweGaN develops and manufactures so-called GaN-on-SiC epitaxial wafers, in which gallium nitride is deposited onto silicon carbide. The material is particularly interesting for semiconductors designed to enable high frequencies and power levels while maintaining high energy efficiency.
In doing so, the company is addressing several markets whose strategic importance is currently growing. Applications range from 5G and telecommunications infrastructure to satellite communications and radar systems, as well as power electronics for data centers.
In particular, the rising energy demands of data centers and AI infrastructure are increasing the pressure to develop more efficient power electronics. At the same time, demand for high-performance high-frequency systems is rising in telecommunications, aerospace, and defense. SweGaN is thus positioning itself at a key point in the value chain: The company does not manufacture the finished chips, but rather develops and produces the material from which such semiconductors can be made.
Production in Sweden Set to Grow
The company emerged from research at Linköping University and now produces its materials in Linköping, Sweden. The $14 million in funding will primarily be used to increase production capacity. SweGaN reports a growing customer base, new strategic partnerships, and the achievement of qualification milestones with customers.
In addition to production, the funds will be allocated to expanding international sales activities, hiring additional skilled personnel, improving infrastructure, and supporting research and development. The focus is on the next generation of the company’s own GaN-on-SiC materials.
“This funding is a strong endorsement of our technology, our team, and our strategy.”
Jr Tai Chen, CEO & Co-Founder of SweGaN
It will enable SweGaN to expand production while accelerating technological development.
Europe’s semiconductor ambitions don’t start with chip factories
The funding is also interesting in the context of the European discussion on technological sovereignty. Public attention often focuses on large chip factories and billion-dollar investments by international semiconductor conglomerates. However, the semiconductor industry consists of a much more complex value chain.
Companies like SweGaN operate in highly specialized areas within this chain that could become increasingly relevant for future applications. North Ventures sees precisely this as a strategic factor. SweGaN has translated technical expertise into commercial progress and could develop into a major European supplier of GaN-on-SiC materials.
A small deep-tech player in a strategically large market
At $14 million, this funding round is modest compared to the billions being invested in new semiconductor factories. For SweGaN, however, this represents a targeted next step toward scaling up.
The company must now demonstrate that its technological position can translate into increasing production volumes and a growing international business.
Europe’s technological sovereignty isn’t determined solely by large chip factories. It also depends on whether specialized DeepTech companies can emerge along the entire semiconductor value chain and subsequently scale up internationally.
