Consumer protection agency issues warning to Tomorrow

The consumer center Baden-Württemberg criticizes "misleading advertising" at the Fintech. Tomorrow has already reacted and adjusted the corresponding wording.

The smartphone bank Tomorrow advertised its premium account with the following sentences: "As a premium account, Tomorrow Zero is made for people with particularly high demands - in climate protection as well as in banking." Underneath it says: "Your C02 footprint compensated".

Consumer advocates take issue with the statement because Tomorrow can't even know the individual carbon footprint of its customers. "Everyone has an individual CO2 footprint, because the product selection is never congruent," says Niels Nauhauser of the consumer center Baden-Württemberg. "Such advertising statements are simply misleading."

Tomorrow has since changed the wording. But the fintech also didn't promise "that it would be about the individual footprint," the company tells the Handelsblatt. Now Tomorrow advertises with: "Through the account fee, we finance CO2 certificates that offset the CO2 footprint of the annual German average of 11.17t per capita CO2 emissions." The promise only applies to customers of the premium account for 15 euros a month, which comes with a wooden giro card.

However, the consumer advocates are still not happy with this. "Average values are simply insubstantial for an informed and self-determined decision," writes the center in a statement. In addition, Tomorrow is not its own bank, the money of the customers is with the Solarisbank. "However, this publishes on its website neither an annual report nor meaningful information on the sustainability of the use of funds," criticizes Nauhauser.
