The healthtech startup voize, a specialist in AI-supported speech recognition in care, has closed a Series A financing round of 50 million US dollars. The round was led by Balderton Capital, with existing investors such as HV Capital, Redalpine and Y Combinator also participating. The company intends to use the capital to further develop its technology and expand into new European and US markets.

High workload due to documentation requirements

Nursing staff continue to spend a large proportion of their working time on administrative tasks. According to studies, up to 30 percent of shift time is spent on documentation. This is time that is not spent on direct patient care.

In Europe and the USA, this expenditure adds up to more than 5.5 billion hours per year and generates 246 billion US dollars in personnel costs. In view of the increasing shortage of skilled workers (the WHO predicts a global shortfall of 4.5 million nursing staff by 2030), reducing bureaucracy is seen as a key lever for easing the burden.

Voice-based documentation instead of manual input

voize is developing an AI that understands spoken information, structures it and automatically converts it into the necessary documentation entries. Nursing staff speak observations, measured values or measures directly into their smartphone; the app processes the information in real time and transfers it to existing documentation systems via an interface.

The solution should not only save time, but also reduce sources of error and enable more complete entries - an advantage for both nursing staff and facilities.

Widely used in German-speaking countries

More than 1,100 care facilities in Germany and Austria are already using voize. In total, more than 75,000 care staff use the AI assistant in their everyday work.

A study conducted together with the Charité confirms a time saving of around 30 percent in documentation. Many facilities are now actively using voize in their recruiting, as less bureaucracy makes the profession more attractive.

The company grew threefold last year and points to a continued strong increase in demand.

AI that specializes in care

voize relies on its own domain-specific AI model that works independently of large generic language models. The technology is tailored to the requirements of care facilities and recognizes medical terminology as well as dialects.

Our AI is not intended to replace nursing staff, but to give them time back - time for care and genuine closeness. With the support of our investors, we can continue to expand the technology and grow internationally.

Fabio Schmidberger, co-founder and CEO

A special feature is the offline functionality: voize can also be used without a stable internet connection. This should both increase data security and ensure reliable use in rural regions.

Founded out of personal need

The start-up was founded in 2020 by Fabio Schmidberger, Marcel Schmidberger and Erik Ziegler. The starting point was the founding family's experience of how little time carers have for interpersonal care in everyday life. The solution was developed in close collaboration with caregivers over tens of thousands of hours of practical use. The aim was to create a technology that integrates seamlessly into existing processes and provides noticeable relief for care staff.

voize is a solution that has emerged directly from the needs of day-to-day care. It creates real relief and strengthens the profession. The strong growth and use in recruiting underline the added value of this technology.

International expansion planned

With the new capital, voize intends to further specialize its AI and expand into other European markets. There are also plans to enter the USA. The aim remains to provide care workers around the world with noticeable relief and to reduce bureaucracy in the long term.
