Full Appeal: How the Munich Startup Festival 2026 Provides a Platform for Startup Initiatives

300 people, countless conversations, and plenty of new ideas—the Munich Startup Festival 2026 demonstrated just how strong Munich’s startup ecosystem is when people actually come together.

Between panel discussions, a DJ, pitches, and beer pong breaks, we spoke with countless students, founders, and supporters from Munich’s startup ecosystem in the Student Area at the Munich Startup Festival, which we organized and hosted together with START Munich and the Young Founders Network. Each conversation reminded us once again: startup culture doesn’t thrive in digital spaces—it thrives in moments like these.

When the startup scene comes together

Events like the Munich Startup Festival are therefore not just a nice bonus. They are the foundation of the community. They bring together people who otherwise would never have heard of one another. They build trust that rarely develops online. One of our personal highlights was, of course, the panel discussion in the Chill&Connect Area with our CEO, Luca Mittermeier, about the vision and motivation behind startup initiatives. All of this took place under the festival’s official motto: No bubble, just real connections.

A Platform for Startup Initiatives

According to the KfW Startup Monitor, by 2025, around 40 percent of all founders in Germany will be under 30, and many of them will launch their startups right after graduating from college.

Luca Mittermaier, CEO:“That’s exactly why we wanted to give these young people a stage with the Student Area and make their confidence, their innovative spirit, and their drive visible to everyone. What I experienced there fills me with confidence for Munich as a business hub and for all of Germany. Because it shows that student startup initiatives and their dedicated members are the breeding ground and the talent behind tomorrow’s innovations. That’s exactly what the Gründungsmagnet supports. Because we stand alongside student startup initiatives. Every day.”

8PM SOCIAL Wins the Munich Startup Award

To wrap up the festival, the Munich Startup Award finals also provided a special moment. Founded by Paul Funke, Saskia Teufel, and Tobias Horelt, the Munich-based startup 8PM SOCIAL has a grand vision: to build Europe’s leading social network—by young people, for young people. The platform aims to bring back the positive aspects of social media: genuine connections between people instead of AI spam, a flood of ads, and doomscrolling.

This victory shows that our idea strikes a chord. We’re happy to ride this momentum. Now things are really getting started.

Paul Funke, Co-Founder of 8PM SOCIAL

Specifically, this means that once a day, at 8 p.m., all users’ photos go online simultaneously—a “Daily Photodump” that, over time, evolves into a digital diary. The feed features only people you actually follow, rather than algorithmically curated content from strangers.

The road to get here wasn’t easy, as co-founder and Gründungsmagnet alumna Saskia Teufel openly admits:“I really can hardly believe we won. When you come up with such a big vision, people often laugh at you at first. We had to take a lot of ‘no’s’ to get here.” It was only thanks to a great team, hard work, and the resulting strong metrics that it became clear: “It is and remains tough, but we have a chance to become the next big player.”

8PM SOCIAL launched in June on an invite-only basis for Android and iOS, has already racked up several thousand downloads, and is currently in a funding round. With the fresh capital, the product is set to scale initially in the DACH region starting this fall, before expanding into other European markets. Winning the award thus comes at a crucial moment.

Stronger Together

300 people, countless conversations, and plenty of new ideas—the Munich Startup Festival 2026 has once again shown that innovation thrives where people come together, whether on stage, during speed networking, or even while playing beer pong. Gründungsmagnet will continue to stand alongside student startup initiatives so that today’s ideas can become tomorrow’s startups. Because change is only possible when we work together.
