Fewer start-ups between July and September

Start-ups in the innovative and technology-focused sector fell by 30 percent year-on-year.

About 30 percent fewer new companies with innovative or technology-focused business models than in 2021 had their names entered in the commercial register between July and September of this year. In absolute numbers, there were 578 new registrations compared to 820 last year. This is reported by the Handelsblatt citing an analysis by venture capitalist Morphais, which in turn draws on data from Startupdetector. There were also fewer startups in the first two quarters - more than 12 percent in the first, and more than 15 percent in the second.

Venture capital investments, on the other hand, are still at a consistently high level. The German Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVK) states that its members invested a total of 2.16 billion euros in the first half of the year. This is more than in 2021. In contrast, according to the BVK's own figures, the investment companies were able to collect 3.02 billion euros in the first half of the year.

While there are fewer startups overall, the focus on deep tech is increasing. In 2022, more deeptechs were already founded (209) than in the whole of last year (207), according to the report. Deeptechs thus now account for more than ten percent of startups.
