The Austrian AI startup fonio.ai has closed a seed financing round of 14.6 million euros. The round was led by renowned investor 20VC and, according to the company, is one of the largest seed rounds in Europe in the past two years. Together with an angel round from December 2025, the capital raised to date totals more than 20 million euros.

In addition to 20VC, existing investors as well as founders and executives from companies such as Synthesia, HubSpot and Revolut also participated.

From AI phone assistant to omnichannel platform

fonio.ai has quickly established itself as a provider of AI-based telephone assistants for small and medium-sized companies. The company is now systematically developing its platform further and expanding the focus of Voice AI to include a comprehensive omnichannel solution for customer communication.

Companies can already integrate WhatsApp in addition to telephony. Email and chatbot functions are set to follow in the coming months. In addition, fonio.ai is developing its own AI-based tools, including an intelligent calendar and a CRM system specially designed for AI-supported customer interactions.

At the heart of the platform is an orchestration layer that connects various AI models and company software in real time. According to the company, around 90 percent of all customer inquiries are already processed fully automatically.

Strong growth in Europe

fonio.ai was founded by CEO Daniel Keinrath and CTO Matthias Gruber. After less than two years on the market, the company already has more than 7,000 customers and sees itself as the market leader in German-speaking countries.

In April alone, fonio.ai reported that it was able to generate additional annual recurring revenue (ARR) of one million euros. The company is aiming to increase its revenue fivefold by the end of the year. fonio.ai is currently active in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Poland and Brazil. The new capital will now be used to systematically develop the UK and the USA.

International expansion picks up speed

A significant part of the financing will be used to establish international locations. By the end of the year, fonio.ai plans to open new offices in New York, Munich, Milan, Paris, London and Warsaw.

CEO Daniel Keinrath is pursuing an ambitious goal: to create a leading global provider of AI-supported customer communication from Europe.

Investor 20VC also sees great potential. The vision: an AI-based platform that will replace numerous individual tools in SMEs in the long term and act as a central operating system for customer communication.

AI becomes the operating system for SMEs

With its full-stack approach, fonio.ai is addressing a market that is coming under increasing pressure due to rising demands on availability and customer service. For small and medium-sized companies in particular, missed customer contacts can mean a direct loss of sales.

The combination of automated telephony, messaging, CRM and workflow control could therefore mark an important step towards fully AI-supported corporate communication. The current financing round provides fonio.ai with the necessary resources to roll out this vision internationally.
