Circunomics cooperates with Shell

The energy company wants to support the start-up in marketing its battery circular economy solutions to large companies.

The Mainz-based start-up Circunomics is entering into a marketing cooperation with the mineral oil company Shell. Together, the two companies want to market the Circunomics-developed recycling system for e-car batteries to new customers. The main focus will be on the automotive industry, the energy storage industry and the transport sector.

Circunomics, founded in 2019 by Felix Wagner and Jan Born, aims to make traction batteries usable for longer. Until now, they have often been recycled, even though they are still useful for another ten to 15 years, for example as local energy storage systems. To this end, the company is creating a digital twin of the battery, which will make it possible to provide the most precise data possible on service life and possible further use.

With the new cooperation partner, the Mainz-based company now wants to get its foot in the door with potential major customers. "At the beginning, there is often a lack of trust and openness towards young companies and innovations like the Circunomics platform," says CEO and co-founder Wagner: "That's why we are pleased that an established energy company like Shell will support us from now on with its large network and thus help build trust in our platform for the industry." Shell, in turn, sees Circunomics' business as helpful in achieving its own goal of net zero emissions as a company by 2050.
