Climate technology startup Crosstown H2R comes out of stealth mode and announces funding and partnerships with Sulzer and Fortum to reduce Europe's dependence on fossil fuels

Zurich, March 18, 2024 - Swiss climate technology startup Crosstown H2R ("Crosstown") has come out of stealth mode and announced funding and partnerships with global industry leaders Sulzer and Fortum. These partnerships are designed to enable gas-fired power plants to realize zero carbon energy production for the first time. The Crosstown team has raised over €2 million in grants from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) and other investors to further develop its proprietary technology.

Gas turbine burner

Crosstown is a pioneering technology company from Switzerland dedicated to the mission of accelerating the evolution towards sustainable energy. Crosstown's approach will be critical to eliminating CO2 emissions from new and existing gas turbines across Europe and extending their lifetime, while continuing to operate reliably on zero or low carbon. In this way, Europe can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels while mitigating the impact of economic and political unrest in other parts of the world.

I strongly believe that we will only truly solve the global climate crisis by building new hardware approaches to reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gases

S. Manoj Harasgama, Founder and Co-CEO Crosstown

Crosstown's technology enables new turbines to operate carbon-free from the outset, while transforming and future-proofing existing infrastructure and turbines. The company has developed the first low nitrogen oxide (NOx) carbon-free combustor for the gas turbine industry, providing the technology for carbon-free turbines in power generation. NOx acts as an indirect greenhouse gas by producing the tropospheric greenhouse gas 'ozone' through photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. Crosstown's tested and proven technology is based on the team's decades of experience and specific research into low emissions and carbon-free solutions.

By partnering with Sulzer, a global independent service provider (ISP), Crosstown can quickly bring its zero-carbon burners to market and deliver a solution to today's global climate challenges. At the same time, Crosstown and Fortum can work together to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector.

Equipped for new NOx regulations

Crosstown's technology offers a unique approach to decarbonizing gas turbines while ensuring international emissions compliance with ultra-low NOx capability. With upcoming NOx regulations in Europe and the US coming into force in 2025, most gas turbines and gas-fired power plants will not be compliant and will need to switch to new technologies.

We have closely followed Crosstown's progress over the last two years and know they have the only ultra-low NOx and zero-carbon capable burner.

Vesa Kylmälä, Managing Director Fortum TGS

A single 100 MW gas turbine emits about 300,000 tons of CO2 annually while operating at only 50% capacity. Converting gas turbines to run on hydrogen (or other low / zero carbon fuels) with Crosstown's technology can completely eliminate CO₂ emissions in these turbines.

Founded in 2022 and based in Baden, Switzerland, Crosstown has an experienced team of scientists, managers and entrepreneurs who combine expertise with experience in hyper-growth. Crosstown's mission is to accelerate humanity's evolution towards sustainable power generation by delivering disruptive technologies with transitional capabilities.
