Freelance Unlocked 2026: Over 850 freelancers discuss the future of work
With more than 850 participants, 65 speakers, five stages, and 83 sessions, the third edition of Freelance Unlocked once again made Berlin the hub of the German-speaking freelancing community. At the Colosseum Berlin, self-employed professionals, entrepreneurs, politicians, and tech experts discussed the future of freelance work, the impact of AI, and the urgently needed political reforms for freelancers.
Organized by freelancermap, the event once again emerged as one of the largest conferences for self-employed professionals in the German-speaking world in 2026.
Freelancers Between Uncertainty and Optimism
The conference took place during a period that many freelancers are finding challenging. The results of the 2026 Freelancer Compass, the largest survey of freelancers in the German-speaking world, paint a mixed picture.
For the first time since the survey began, the average hourly rate fell slightly from 104 to 103 euros. At the same time, overall satisfaction among the self-employed dropped from 81 to 73 percent. Many freelancers report growing uncertainty when it comes to project planning and an increasing workload.
Nevertheless, the mood in Berlin was characterized by a sense of renewal, exchange, and optimism about the future.
Freelancer Policy Becomes an Economic Issue
One topic of the conference was the political situation for the self-employed in Germany. Representatives from politics, business, and the freelancer community discussed, in particular, legal certainty when commissioning freelance experts and the reform of the status determination procedure.
The community’s message was clear: Anyone who wants to promote innovation, digitalization, and competitiveness must also create better framework conditions for project-based collaboration.
Policies that work against self-employment are policies that work against the country’s own economic standing.

The call for greater legal certainty was a recurring theme throughout the event.
AI Is Becoming a Tool for the Self-Employed
Hardly any other topic was discussed as intensely as artificial intelligence. The focus was less on whether AI should be used and more on how freelancers can make effective use of the technology.
Many presentations focused on integrating AI into existing business models, developing scalable services, and exploring new opportunities for process automation. AI doesn’t replace freelancers; it changes the way they work.
The Community Continues to Grow
With over 20 English-language sessions and numerous international guests, Freelance Unlocked 2026 also showcased its increasingly international character. The event demonstrated that freelancing is no longer a niche topic. The community is growing larger, more professional, and more self-assured, and is increasingly asserting its place in the debate on economic and labor market policy.
The next edition of Freelance Unlocked has already been announced for May 2027.
