For Sono Motors, a chapter in German startup history has come to a close: The Munich-based company ceased operations as of July 31, 2026, and has filed for bankruptcy. Following the withdrawal of its main investor, Sono Group N.V., in the spring, the company was unable to secure viable financing despite intensive discussions with investors.

Now, the remaining Sono Solar business —including all technology and intellectual property—is up for sale.

From the Sion Solar Car to the B2B Solar Business

Starting in 2016, Sono Motors attracted international attention with its solar-powered electric car, the Sion, and became one of Germany’s best-known cleantech startups. After the vehicle project was discontinued, the company has focused entirely on its B2B business centered on solar technologies for commercial vehicles and fleets since 2024.

However, even this strategic shift ultimately failed to close the funding gap.

Technology Portfolio Seeks New Owner

As part of the insolvency proceedings, managing directors Denis Azhar and Jan Schiermeister now intend to sell the core technology portfolio. Among the assets up for sale are:

  • all of Sono Solar’s intellectual property (IP),
  • the solar integration of the former Sion vehicle project,
  • power electronics such as solar charge controllers for vehicles,
  • as well as the developed Solar Data Services.

Management hopes that a buyer will acquire these market-ready technologies and continue to develop them.

Ten years of development work

The goal now is to find an investor or strategic buyer who recognizes the technological potential and continues the business in whole or in part.

The expertise gained from a decade of solar mobility is unique.

Managing Director Jan Schiermeister also addresses the company’s long-standing community. He thanks employees, customers, partners, and supporters who have accompanied Sono Motors’ development over many years. Despite the bankruptcy, the company remains convinced that solar technology will be an integral part of modern vehicles in the future.

The insolvency marks the end—for now—of the story of one of Germany’s best-known solar mobility startups. Whether the technology developed will live on under new ownership is likely to be decided in the coming months.
