At the beginning of the year, Hy2gen received investor funding of 200 million euros to build plants worldwide that produce fuels from green hydrogen. Parts of the capital are now flowing to Canada.

The Canadian offshoot of the start-up Hy2gen plans to develop and produce aviation fuels based on green hydrogen in Québec. To this end, Hy2gen Canada wants to cooperate with the SAF+ Consortium. According to the company, a corresponding memorandum of understanding has already been signed.

Founded in 2017, the start-up is actually based in Wiesbaden, Germany, but also builds and operates its green hydrogen plants in other countries. The offshoot in Québec, Canada, has already existed since 2019, and Hy2gen is also active in Germany, France, Norway and the United States. Investors include Trafigura, Hy24, Mirova, CDPQ and Technip Energies, among others.

Canada's SAF+ Consortium produces synthetic kerosene from industry CO2 emissions using green hydrogen. The consortium's partners include major companies in the aviation sector such as Airbus, Air Transat, ADM Montreal Airport and Aéro-Montréal.

"Hy2gen believes that hydrogen-based renewable fuels are a perfect near-term solution for decarbonizing entire mobility industries such as the aviation sector," said Hy2gen Canada President Cyril Dufau-Sansot. "We welcome the partnership agreement with SAF+ Consortium, which will allow us to not only help Québec meet its 2030 greenhouse gas targets, but also lead the way."
