MBG Mittelständische Beteiligungsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg is investing 1 million euros in Naturenergie Rotachtal GmbH & Co. KG. The investment will support the construction of a biomethane processing plant, which is expected to make a significant contribution to the regional and sustainable energy supply in Baden-Württemberg.

At the heart of the project is a facility costing several million euros that processes biogas into high-quality biomethane. In this process, carbon dioxide, water, and hydrogen sulfide are separated from the methane. The processed biomethane can then be used as a climate-friendly energy source, for example for heating or as fuel.

Regional Energy for Regional Companies

In the future, the biomethane produced will be delivered via the gas grid to Vetter Pharma GmbH in Ravensburg, where it will be used, among other things, to heat buildings. The carbon dioxide produced during processing is also reused: A neighboring specialty crop farm uses the CO₂ in its greenhouses, thereby reducing the need for fossil fuels to generate CO₂.

In addition to biomethane production, the project includes further investments in agri-photovoltaics and a battery storage system. The goal is to create as complete a regional value chain as possible, based on the principle of“energy from the region for the region.”

Investment Strengthens Overall Financing

Financing is being provided jointly by Volksbank Donau-Oberschwaben and Nord/LB. MBG’s investment was a key component of this, as the financing banks treat the investment capital as equity for economic purposes, thereby strengthening the financing structure.

According to MBG, the project serves as a flagship initiative for the regional energy transition and is intended to demonstrate how sustainable energy projects can be implemented in an economically viable manner. At the same time, the investment company is thereby opening up another growth area for small and medium-sized enterprises in Baden-Württemberg.
