OneFiber builds Germany-wide intranet

The start-up wants to lay fiber optic cables along the railway line. Things are set to get underway at the turn of the year.
Saarland-based start-up OneFiber has won a major cooperation partner in Deutsche Bahn. The company plans to lay fiber optic cables along the tracks - that's a total of 27,000 kilometers of track.
"I am sure that we have found a good way in the talks," Frank Sennhenn, the CEO of Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Netz, told Handelsblatt. "Therefore, it is now up to OneFiber to quickly implement its expansion plans." OneFiber is headed by Klaus Kremper, the former head of freight transport at Deutsche Bahn. The fiber-optic network is to cost 1.8 billion euros, paid for by private investors. The first cables are to be laid as early as "the turn of the year," Kremper told Handelsblatt
. The network is to act as an intranet in the event of a cyber attack and can be cut off from the rest of the world.Deutsche Bahn is laying its own fiber-optic network along the tracks. 20,000 kilometers have already been laid, and Deutsche Bahn and OneFiber now want to coordinate for the remaining 8,200 kilometers. The start-up wants to lay the fiber optic cables in existing ducts next to the tracks. The two networks will not compete with each other, the partners stressed.
