Primogene raises 4.1 million euros for industrial breast milk molecules

Biotech from Leipzig makes ingredients from breast milk scalable for the first time. Enzyme tech could change markets from infant formula to pharmaceuticals.

The Leipzig-based biotechnology start-up Primogene GmbH has raised 4.1 million euros in a seed financing round. The round was led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF). Other investors include Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen (TGFS), better ventures, Sächsische Beteiligungsgesellschaft (SBG), Golzern Holding, FS Life Science Investment and Marc Struhalla.

The capital will flow in particular into the expansion of production capacities, the further development of the IP portfolio and strategic partnerships.

Breast milk as a blueprint for industrial innovation

At the heart of the technology are complex bioactive molecules that occur in nature, particularly in breast milk. These are considered crucial for the development of the immune system, intestinal health and cognitive processes, especially in premature babies. Studies suggest that children who are breastfed in the first year have a significantly better immune system later in life and are less susceptible to allergies.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), including the complex molecule DSLNT, are particularly relevant. These substances have so far been difficult and costly to produce on an industrial scale.

Enzymatic platform as a technological breakthrough

Primogene relies on an enzymatic production process that makes it possible to produce complex molecules in a nature-identical, sustainable and scalable way. Compared to traditional fermentative processes, the approach promises lower costs and better scalability.

The company has already developed processes for several HMOs, including LNDFH I, one of the most common molecules in breast milk. The market is currently developing very dynamically. The global HMO market is growing by around 18 to 20 percent annually, while the majority of new infant formula products already contain corresponding ingredients.

Broad range of applications beyond infant nutrition

Primogene's platform technology is not limited to use in infant formula. The molecules produced are used in various areas:

  • Supporting intestinal health in adults
  • Promotion of cognitive functions in old age
  • Use in cosmetics and personal care
  • Raw materials for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical applications

Through its European production, the company also contributes to the stabilization of critical supply chains.

First commercial successes and strong research partners

Primogene has already launched its first ingredients for cosmetic products on the market in collaboration with partners. Further pharmaceutical applications are currently in the test phase.

In parallel, the company is working with the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology to research the potential of the molecules for the prevention of infectious diseases. There are also collaborations with intensive care units for premature babies to develop clinically relevant applications.

Establishment of integrated production in Leipzig

Primogene covers the entire production process from enzyme development to biotransformation and purification at the Leipzig site. The tech part is secured by a growing patent portfolio. The company was founded in 2023 by Reza Mahour, Valerian Grote and Linda Karger.

Focus on scaling and market entry

Primogene intends to use the new financing to scale its production, expand its team and enter into targeted partnerships, particularly in the infant formula and functional food sectors.

The company's long-term goal is to make complex bioactive ingredients available on an industrial scale and thus support human health across all stages of life.
