Top 50 start-ups in Germany honored

Around 850 winners of 171 start-up competitions were analyzed and evaluated for the ranking. For the first time, a duo of female founders took first place.
The portal Top 50 start-ups has selected the most innovative German start-ups. At the top of the winners' podium is Traceless Materials from Hamburg. The start-up wants to combat global plastic pollution with the help of a sustainable plastic alternative.
With Traceless Materials at the top, two female founders took first place for the first time. In second place is the Berlin-based start-up Conbotics, which develops robotic solutions for the construction industry. Third place went to Crafting Future from Hanover, a developer of sustainable reusable products in the food sector.
Strongly represented in the ranking are the health and life sciences, medical technology, biotechnology, green economy, mobility and software sectors. The ranking reveals a regional innovation gap and the low proportion of female founders. Almost 50 percent of the selected startups come from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia, while the states of Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony-Anhalt and Saarland are not represented in the ranking at all. The proportion of female founders among the top 50 start-ups is just under 20 percent. No women are represented at all in 60 percent of the founder teams.
The Top 50 Start-ups platform belongs to Passion4Business GmbH, in which the FAZ publishing group also holds a stake. Partners of the platform are Agicap, Commerzbank and Lexrocket.
