Zalando apparently wants to sell clothes in the U.S. starting in 2023

Under the name "Kangaroo," Zalando executives are apparently preparing what is probably the biggest coup in the history of the still young company.

Business Insider learned about the fashion giant's US expansion from various internal sources. Allegedly, Zalando is to invest a three-digit million amount. According to the report, more than 100 people have been working on Project "Kangaroo," all of whom apparently signed a non-disclosure agreement. Zalando reportedly wants to focus on the northeastern United States first, while also trying out new marketing strategies. However, the idea could fail due to the group's current poor financial results, writes online portal Business Insider.

Chief executive Jim Freeman has worked for Amazon for a total of eight and a half years and is therefore familiar with the US market. The Northeast, meanwhile, is considered a high-tech hub and is home to a variety of distribution and logistics facilities. There, Zalando apparently finds a first-class infrastructure and, in the cities, customers who are also interested in the numerous European brands that the online retailer has so far primarily included in its assortment.

Business Insider sent a long list of questions to Zalando about the "Kangaroo" project, but the editorial team did not receive any answers. A spokeswoman said, "In recent years, we have made great progress on our growth path in Europe. We are continuously on the lookout for opportunities to improve our offering, including possible new categories and regions. In this context, we believe there will also be opportunities to grow beyond the European continent."
