Buying Cryptocurrencies: How BW Bank Customers Can Gain Access to Digital Assets Through Bitpanda
Erik Frank is a project manager at LBBW. In this role, he shared responsibility for the project. In this interview, he explains what this means in concrete terms for interested customers, why the bank is taking action right now, and why partnerships with specialized technology providers are becoming increasingly important for the future of banking.
Mr. Frank, what does this new offering mean specifically for BW-Bank customers?
In the future, BW-Bank customers will be able to access Bitpanda’s crypto services directly from their familiar digital banking environment. They’ll find the access point right where they already conduct their securities transactions and will be redirected to our partner’s platform. The key here is a clear division of roles: BW-Bank provides access, while the actual crypto services are provided by Bitpanda. The process is therefore designed to be as simple and straightforward as possible. At the same time, it must always be transparent which company customers are dealing with at any given point.
Cryptocurrencies are volatile, require explanation, and are by no means uncontroversial. Why would an established bank like BW-Bank still want to provide its retail customers with access?
Because the needs of bank customers are evolving—and BW-Bank wanted to reflect this evolution in its offerings. Interest in cryptocurrencies has risen significantly in recent years. Many customers no longer view digital assets as something outside the established financial world, but instead want their bank to provide them with access as well.
This growing interest was the decisive starting point for us. BW-Bank naturally wants to offer its customers solutions for the financial issues that are relevant to them. This is not about promoting cryptocurrencies or downplaying their risks. Rather, our goal is to address a specific customer need and create clear, transparent, and responsible access to it.
Why is this response coming now, of all times?
Interest in cryptocurrencies has noticeably increased. At the same time, the technical and regulatory framework has evolved to the point where banks can now address business models involving digital assets in a more structured manner.
At the same time, we are building on existing experience: LBBW has maintained a strategic partnership with Bitpanda since 2024. Through this partnership, the bank initially provided its corporate clients with access to cryptocurrencies and gained valuable experience.
The move into the retail banking business is a logical next step in the development of an existing partnership, with the goal of responsibly addressing new customer needs and meaningfully integrating relevant offerings into existing customer relationships.
Why did LBBW decide not to develop the offering on its own?
The key factor is which model makes the most sense for customers as well as from a regulatory, technical, and economic perspective.
We therefore sought a partner with an established and regulated offering, a proven technical infrastructure, and experience in the digital assets market. At the same time, it was important to us that this partner could support us over the long term—across different business models and various forms of collaboration.
Bitpanda contributes specialized technology and expertise in the crypto market. LBBW brings its customer relationships, understanding of its customers’ needs, and access through the familiar digital environment. This allows both partners to focus on their respective strengths.
What do customers expect from a service they access through their bank’s platform?
Above all, simple and transparent access. Customers don’t want to be dropped off at their bank’s digital front door and then have to start over in a completely unfamiliar process without any guidance.
At the same time, a user-friendly experience must not blur the lines of responsibility. Proximity to the banking environment can build trust. That is precisely why it must be clearly evident which role BW-Bank assumes and which services Bitpanda provides. Convenience and transparency were therefore not opposing goals, but rather two equally important requirements for implementation.
What strategic advantage do banks gain from this model? Is the primary goal simply to prevent losing customers to other platforms?
Of course, it is important for a bank to be able to meet its customers’ needs within the existing customer relationship. However, that alone does not fully explain the situation. Behind this lies a more fundamental question: What role does a bank play in a financial market where an increasing number of specialized providers are emerging? The answer cannot be to replicate every product and every technology in-house. Nor, however, can it be to leave relevant developments entirely to others.
In the future, banks can leverage their strengths even more by meaningfully integrating specialized offerings into existing customer relationships. They know their customers, understand regulatory requirements, and have established digital access channels. Technology partners, on the other hand, bring solutions and market experience that have been specifically developed for individual use cases.
Does access through the banking ecosystem also change the perception of cryptocurrencies?
Cryptocurrencies remain a volatile asset class. Therefore, the requirements for transparency and communication are particularly high. Their integration into a bank’s ecosystem must not be misinterpreted as either a recommendation or a seal of approval for an investment decision.
Our offering is therefore aimed at customers who inform themselves independently and make their own investment decisions. Our goal is to provide them with transparent access without downplaying the unique characteristics and risks of this asset class.
What does this project say about the future of banking?
In my opinion, what matters is not developing every service in-house or offering them under a single brand. What matters is providing customers with meaningful, transparent, and as simple as possible access to relevant financial products.
Banks remain an important part of the customer relationship. In the context of this project, this means, quite specifically, that BW Bank customers gain access to Bitpanda’s crypto offerings from within their familiar digital environment. This is where the immediate benefit for customers lies—and, at the same time, the strategic significance of the partnership.
