BAI Capital raises 600 million US dollars for new growth fund
The Asian venture capital investor BAI Capital has successfully completed the first close of its new US dollar fund. Capital commitments totaling 600 million US dollars have already been collected at the first close. The target volume of the fund is 800 million US dollars.
Global growth companies
With the new fund, BAI Capital is focusing on companies that have already proven their technology, market position and economic viability and are now on the verge of international expansion.
Investments will be made in three categories in particular:
- Chinese market leaders that are tapping into new growth markets abroad
- Asian technology companies with global ambitions
- International companies that can accelerate their expansion with the help of the Chinese market
The focus sectors include technology and artificial intelligence, financial services, consumer & entertainment as well as enterprise software and business services.
Growth instead of early-stage bets
Unlike many traditional venture capital funds, BAI Capital is increasingly focusing on companies with already validated business models.
The core of the new fund is not pursuing early-stage concepts, but supporting companies that have already proven their technological strength, customer loyalty and commercial viability
Anna Long, Founder and Managing Director BAI Capital
BAI Capital is thus following a trend that can be observed in many venture markets. Investors are placing greater emphasis on resilient sales, proven product-market fit and clear expansion prospects.
18 years of investment history
BAI Capital was founded in 2008 and can look back on a long history in the Asian venture capital market. According to the company, its track record includes
- 22 IPOs
- 51 trade sale and secondary exits
Over the years, the company has developed from a classic early-stage investor to a growth investor with an international focus.
German roots at Bertelsmann
BAI Capital was originally founded as Bertelsmann's investment arm in Asia and initially operated under the name Bertelsmann Asia Investments.
In 2021, the company completed its first independent fundraising. At the same time, BAI Capital continues to leverage Bertelsmann's international network and industry and media expertise to support portfolio companies in their global expansion.
Asia as a starting point for global champions
With the new fund, BAI Capital aims to specifically support companies that bring technological innovations from Asia to international markets.
The investment company sees China and the Asian innovation ecosystem in particular as a source of future global market leaders. This includes areas such as AI, software, digital financial services and platform models. The successful first close of over USD 600 million shows that institutional investors continue to focus on high-growth technology companies with global scaling potential despite a challenging market environment.
