BMG cancels introduction of e-prescription

The original start was planned for 01 January 2022. Now the test phase is to be extended first.

On January 1, it should actually be so far: patients should no longer receive medicine prescriptions on a pink slip of paper to then hand them in at the pharmacy. Instead this should happen now obligatorily above all digitally. But apparently nothing will come of it now. First had among other things Pharmacy Adhoc and the Tagesschau reported on a letter of the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), which addressed itself to the partners of the company Gematik. In it, the introduction of the e-prescription was postponed. Reason: The necessary systems were not yet available to a comprehensive extent.

Gematik also now announced that practices, pharmacies, health insurance companies and software providers would have to gain more experience with the e-prescription in order to be able to convert the system safely. Therefore, the nationwide test phase will be extended. This has been running since the beginning of December and should be used to install updates, the software, train staff and test the stability of the interaction of the individual components. As soon as some fixed quality criteria are fulfilled, the rollout should take place, explains the Gematik. However, the procedure has not yet been determined. The company has repeatedly stressed that the test phase must be used intensively by all participants so that the e-prescription can succeed. All players are called upon to participate intensively.

The e-prescription is expected to bring many advantages. For example, it should be possible for family members to redeem it on behalf of others, it should be secure and uncomplicated, and it should save on travel. Among other things, it should work via an app that tens of thousands of people have already downloaded - in the hope that they will soon be able to use it. However, instead of an app, there are also supposed to be printed QR codes that patients can receive. It's unclear when the launch will actually go live.
