Ground A Raises 9.1 Million Euros for Laser-Based Drone Defense
The German defense-tech startup Ground A has raised 9.1 million euros in a pre-seed funding round. The round was led by Vsquared Ventures. Other investors include Quantum Systems, GRIF, Robin Capital, ABACON, Leblon Capital, and OVNI Capital, as well as several entrepreneurs from the European defense and technology sectors. The company, which was founded just in January 2026, plans to use the capital to industrialize its first drone defense system, the GA 1000, and establish mass production in Germany.
Ground A develops software- and laser-based systems for drone and air defense. According to the company, it completed the prototype phase of the GA 1000 just a few months after its founding. The system is now in the testing and validation phase ahead of its planned market launch.
Vsquared Ventures Leads Pre-Seed Round
The funding round, which was already completed in June, is led by Vsquared Ventures. Other participants include Quantum Systems, GRIF, Robin Capital, ABACON, Leblon Capital, and OVNI Capital.
The investor group also includes Florian Seibel, Sven Kruck, J14 Capital, Andreas Nauerz, Marlon Braumann, and Arx Robotics CEO Stefan Roebel.

With this, Ground A has assembled a consortium of investors that, in addition to traditional venture capital, is expected to bring expertise from defense tech, drone technology, software, and industrial scaling.
Lasers Instead of Traditional Interceptor Munitions
With the GA 1000, Ground A is taking a different approach than traditional kinetic defense systems. The platform combines radar and other sensors with computer vision, proprietary AI, and a laser as the effector. This is intended to enable the automated detection, classification, and tracking of small and agile drones. According to Ground A, however, the decision on whether to actually deploy the effector remains with a human operator.
The system is designed to be relatively compact, with a footprint the size of a Euro pallet. This is intended to allow the GA 1000 to be deployed on the move and relocated between different locations. This makes the technology appealing not only for military scenarios. The protection of airports, energy facilities, industrial sites, logistics hubs, and other critical infrastructure is also among the potential applications for such systems.
Open Architecture for Existing Defense Systems
Ground A is not developing the GA 1000 as an isolated, stand-alone system. According to the company, the architecture is open and designed to be vendor- and system-agnostic. This is intended to allow the technology to be integrated into existing air defense, command, and control systems. Furthermore, integration into land-, sea-, and air-based platforms is planned.
This approach could be crucial for further commercialization. Defense customers already have complex sensor, command, and control systems in place. New technologies must therefore not only function on their own but also integrate as seamlessly as possible into existing structures.
Series Production Planned in Germany
With the 9.1 million euros, Ground A now intends to prepare for the transition from development to industrialization. According to the company, it is establishing a modular series production facility in Germany for this purpose. Another round of financing is already planned for 2027, which is intended to significantly expand production capacity.
Ground A aims not only to bring its defense systems to operational readiness from a technical standpoint but also to be able to produce them in larger quantities thereafter. In the field of drone defense in particular, this industrial scalability is increasingly becoming a decisive factor. Modern conflicts involve a high volume of relatively inexpensive unmanned systems. Defense solutions must therefore not only be technologically advanced but also cost-effective and available in sufficient quantities.
Founded as recently as January 2026
Ground A was founded asrecently as January 2026 and maintains locations in Berlin and Düsseldorf. A pre-seed funding round followed as early as June, and according to the company, the first system is now in the testing and validation phase just a few months later. The GA 1000 is intended to be just the beginning. Ground A plans a broader product platform for drone and air defense, on which additional systems will be developed.
Lead investor Vsquared Ventures sees particular potential in the combination of mobility and scalability. “The ability to defend against drones effectively and cost-efficiently is becoming a key technology for Europe’s security,” says General Partner Benedikt von Schoeler.
Europe’s defense tech companies must move from prototyping to production
The funding for Ground A is part of a growing number of European investments in drone and drone defense technologies. The focus is shifting increasingly: the priority is no longer solely on developing a technically functional prototype, but on its rapid industrialization.
This is precisely where the next challenge for Ground A lies. Securing 9.1 million euros in pre-seed capital just a few months after founding is remarkable for a young German startup. However, whether this will actually result in a relevant provider for Germany, NATO, and allied nations will become clear primarily in the next phase. The GA 1000 must first prove its capabilities through testing and validation. This will be followed by market launch, production, and integration into existing systems. Ground A is already planning the next round of funding for 2027.
As such, the startup exemplifies a key challenge of the European defense tech boom: Europe needs not only more new defense technologies, but also the industrial capacity to quickly make successful developments available in large quantities.
