Pandektes Raises 13.5 Million Euros in Series A Funding
The Danish legal tech company Pandektes has closed a Series A funding round totaling 13.5 million euros. The round was led by Alstin Capital, with PROfounders, Scale Capital, and existing investors also participating. Founded in Copenhagen, the company is developing a platform that allows legal professionals to search and analyze laws, court rulings, and other legal sources. Pandektes plans to use the capital to drive its expansion in Europe and North America and to increasingly open its legal data infrastructure to external providers.
More than 500 organizations use Pandektes
Pandektes is entering a market that has been dominated by established legal databases for decades. According to the company, less than two years after its launch, more than 500 law firms, companies, and public institutions are now using the platform.
Revenue has increased sixfold over the past twelve months. According to the company, about two-thirds of the organizations that test Pandektes subsequently become paying customers. In some cases, existing licenses for other research platforms are completely replaced.
Pandektes does not publish absolute revenue or customer figures beyond the 500 organizations mentioned.
The company is currently active in Germany, Switzerland, and Denmark.
AI Structures Laws and Court Decisions
The technical challenge with legal data lies less in gaining access to information in the first place. Many laws, court rulings, and administrative decisions are publicly available. However, they come from thousands of different sources and must be continuously captured, updated, structured, and linked together.
Pandektes aims to automate this process to a large extent.
The platform collects legal information and processes it so that users can search relevant sources and identify connections between different documents. Artificial intelligence takes on tasks that, in traditional databases, are sometimes handled by large editorial teams.
Human expertise will continue to play a role, particularly in legal assessment and quality control.
Cross-Border Legal Research
Another focus is on standardizing legal data from different legal systems.
Especially when dealing with European issues, lawyers can quickly run into limitations with national databases. Pandektes aims to make information from different countries available within a common structure, thereby facilitating research on European law, for example.
With the new funding, this infrastructure is to be expanded to include additional European legal systems as well as North America.
CEO Casper Laursen sees this as an opportunity to build an alternative to nationally developed databases, whose information repositories and workflows have become established over decades.
API Aims to Make Pandektes an Infrastructure Provider
Of particular strategic interest is the planned opening of the data infrastructure via its own API.
Pandektes is thus positioning itself not exclusively as a research platform for legal professionals. Law firms, companies, public institutions, and other software providers will be able to integrate the structured legal data directly into their own applications in the future.
The company is thus distinguishing itself from legal AI providers that develop complete work platforms for lawyers. Instead, Pandektes aims to operate at a lower level and provide the research and data infrastructure.
This could make the platform relevant for providers of AI agents and other legal AI applications as well. According to the company, the reliability of these applications depends largely on the quality and structure of the underlying legal data.
Data Becomes a Competitive Advantage for Legal AI
With its Series A funding round, Pandektes is seeking to position itself at a fundamental level in an increasingly competitive LegalTech market. While many providers are competing for the direct user interface for lawyers, the company is focusing on the underlying database.
This approach could become particularly relevant as more and more law firms and companies begin using their own AI applications or specialized legal AI products. These require reliable, up-to-date, and machine-readable legal information.
Whether Pandektes can actually establish itself as a cross-border alternative to established legal databases, however, depends largely on the coverage, timeliness, and quality of its data. With 13.5 million euros, the company now has additional capital to scale precisely this infrastructure across additional legal systems.
