Minister President Söder and Economics Minister Aiwanger are committed to the development of the BioCampus MultiPilot in Straubing harbor. Find out how this project promotes a sustainable economy and the use of biogenic materials.

A milestone for Bavaria's bioeconomic future was set on Wednesday with the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the BioCampus MultiPilot in the port of Straubing. This project marks a major step towards a more sustainable economy through the use of biogenic materials such as straw, leaves and wood to manufacture more environmentally friendly products in various branches of industry.

The project, which was initiated by Minister President Dr. Markus Söder and Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger, will receive funding from the Free State of Bavaria to the tune of 80 million euros out of a total budget of around 90 million euros. The construction work is being carried out by various companies such as Swietelsky AG, Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH, Bioengineering AG and Schrader GmbH.

Today is a great day for the Bavarian bioeconomy, which benefits from the cornerstones of our economy: Strengthening the framework and promoting research. Thanks to our high-tech agenda, the industrial and medium-sized players of the future are emerging here in the biotech stronghold of Straubing.

Markus Söder, Prime Minister of Bavaria

The BioCampus MultiPilot is seen as a pioneering project for the Bavarian bioeconomy and is a key component of the Straubing region's strategy of focusing on renewable raw materials. Lord Mayor Markus Pannermayr emphasized the milestones achieved in terms of financing and planning permission, which are now getting the project off the ground.

Minister President Söder highlighted the importance of this project and emphasized that Straubing was playing a key role in shaping the future of industrial biotechnology with its high-tech agenda. Economics Minister Aiwanger added that these investments will further expand Bavaria's pioneering role in the bioeconomy.

Straubing has been a hub for renewable raw materials for years. Science and business are intertwined here to form a forward-looking network.

Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs

Experts such as Dr. Oliver Minge from Wacker AG and Dr. Louisa Gronenberg from biotech start-up Insempra see the BioCampus MultiPilot as an important facility that will help to demonstrate biotechnological processes and bring innovative products to market more quickly.

The construction of the BioCampus MultiPilot is a step towards a bioeconomy and will offer companies, research institutions and start-ups the opportunity to optimize their processes and produce product samples in order to develop more sustainable solutions. The facility is due to go into operation at the end of 2025 and will serve as a central location for demonstrating and scaling up biotechnological processes.
