The Cologne-based startup Vytal sees reusable cups and containers as a digital infrastructure for the events industry and has now secured additional growth capital in the millions.

With this fresh capital, the company aims in particular to drive the expansion of its Vytal.ONE platform and accelerate its international expansion in the sports, events, and entertainment sectors. The focus is on stadiums, arenas, festivals, and large venues that are increasingly investing in digital processes, fan experience, and sustainable operating models.

From Reusable Cups to Digital Infrastructure

According to the company, Vytal is one of the world’s leading providers of digital reusable systems. The company is now active in more than 20 countries, works with over 7,000 business customers, and has already replaced more than 25 million single-use containers with reusable alternatives. According to the company, the return rate in open reusable systems is over 99 percent.

However, the business model now extends far beyond packaging alone. Through the use of QR codes and RFID technology, reusable cups and containers become digital data points that can be tracked, analyzed, and monetized in real time. This offers stadium and event venue operators several advantages: faster operations at concession stands, additional sponsorship opportunities, improved fan experiences, and a measurable reduction in waste and CO2 emissions.

Sports and Entertainment Are Becoming a Growth Engine

The market for sports and entertainment events in Europe and North America is currently developing particularly dynamically for Vytal. Its portfolio of clients already includes renowned venues such as the San Francisco Giants’ stadium in Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the OMR Festival in Hamburg, and numerous other major events and entertainment formats.

This development coincides with a fundamental transformation of the industry. Stadiums and event venues are increasingly investing in cashless payment systems, digital fan experiences, more efficient food and beverage concepts, and more sustainable operating models. At the same time, the demand for new, measurable sponsorship and activation opportunities is growing.

Sponsorship, Sustainability, and Fan Experience in One Product

This is precisely where Vytal comes in. The smart reusable cups serve simultaneously as packaging, advertising media, and a data source. This gives event organizers new opportunities to visibly integrate sponsors into the event experience while transparently documenting the environmental impact of their events.

We are currently witnessing a historic turning point for the reusable industry.

Instead of selling reusable products solely on the basis of sustainability arguments, the infrastructure is increasingly becoming an economic and digital value-add for event organizers.

Investors see the next infrastructure revolution

Investors, too, no longer view the market exclusively through the lens of sustainability. For them, the circular economy could become a new form of economic infrastructure.

Just as the solar industry has transformed energy supply, a similar transformation is now on the horizon in the circular economy, explains Kristýna Machová, Investment Director at INVEN Capital. In the sports and entertainment sectors in particular, digital reusable systems could become a central component of modern venues in the future.

A Digital Operating System for Reusable Containers

At the heart of this strategy is the Vytal.ONE platform. It enables millions of reusable containers to be identified, tracked, and analyzed using QR code and RFID technology. This provides operators with detailed information on usage patterns, return rates, circulation cycles, and the environmental and economic impacts of their reusable systems. The focus is not on individual reusable products, but on smart, connected reusable ecosystems that combine sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and digital services.

As a result, the Cologne-based company is positioning itself not only as a provider of sustainable packaging but increasingly as an infrastructure platform for the next generation of stadiums, arenas, and event venues.
