Green hydrogen for Europe. Eternal Power plans one of the largest production plants for green hydrogen in Dummerstorf and secures purchase agreements worth 2.3 billion euros

Hamburg, October 16, 2024 - Hamburg-based scale-up Eternal Power is planning to build a large-scale production plant for green hydrogen in Dummerstorf, near Rostock. With a planned capacity of 80 megawatts, the plant will produce 8,000 tons of green hydrogen per year from 2028. An expansion to 400 megawatts is already being planned.

Large-scale project for green hydrogen

The new plant in Dummerstorf will be built on a five-hectare site. Eternal Power has already secured purchase agreements for the hydrogen produced. A preliminary contract worth 2.3 billion euros has been signed, which is considered a decisive step in the realization of the project. The green hydrogen will primarily be supplied to energy-intensive industries such as shipping, aviation and the chemical and steel industries.

Importance for the energy transition

Green hydrogen is seen as a central component of the energy transition. Andreas Rimkus emphasizes how important hydrogen is for the sustainable development of energy-intensive industries in Germany.

Projects such as Eternal Power's promote domestic production and support the achievement of climate targets.

The German government has also recognized the importance of the hydrogen market. In July 2024, the Federal Ministry of Economics under Robert Habeck approved funding of 500 million euros for hydrogen projects in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Location advantages in Dummerstorf

Dummerstorf was chosen as the location for the new plant due to several factors. The proximity to offshore wind farms, the connection to the high-voltage grid and the planned hydrogen core network offer ideal conditions for the production of green hydrogen.

Dummerstorf combines all the important prerequisites - from renewable energy sources to logistical connections.

A software solution from Eternal Power is also intended to optimize electricity procurement in order to ensure high utilization of the electrolysis plant at low cost.

The planned production capacity is to be expanded to 400 megawatts by 2030. The expansion of the high-voltage infrastructure by grid operator 50Hertz is already being planned for this. Eternal Power has already secured the necessary space for the expansion and, according to the company, there is demand from customers.
