The start-up creates a digital twin of energy networks, and now Eon is acquiring a majority stake in the Cologne-based company.

The energy group Eon has acquired a majority stake in the Cologne-based start-up Envelio. The software company has already been working with the distribution network operators Westnetz and E.dis, which belong to Eon, for three years. Envelio enables the creation of a digital twin of the energy network in order to coordinate it on the basis of real-time data. The Cologne-based company will continue to exist as an independent company.

For Eon, the investment is part of an effort to "create an open digital energy ecosystem," according to a statement. "With Envelio and its dedicated management team, we are securing another key technology that will enable energy companies to manage their energy networks more efficiently," said Victoria Ossadnik, Eon board member responsible for digital. "It's an important technology for Eon and also for other utilities to master the energy transition."

Envelio is a spin-off of RWTH Aachen University and has a team of over 70 employees. Founder Simon Koopmann says of Eon's involvement, "We are very excited about the new strategic partnership with Eon, as it allows us to further scale our technology and jointly develop the new standard for digital grid management."
