Getir probably takes over Gorillas

The market for delivery services continues to consolidate: Gorillas is out of the running. Founder Kagan Sümer has to vacate the chief executive's chair.

There had been speculation about the sale of Gorillas since October, but now it is apparently official: Turkish competitor Getir has taken over the delivery service from Berlin. According to information from the Financial Times 1.2 billion U.S. dollars flowed in the deal. This drastically reduced the valuation of the company. In September 2021, the valuation was still three billion US dollars.

The combined company is said to be worth around ten billion US dollars. In March, Getir alone was still worth around 11.8 billion U.S. dollars and has therefore also lost ground. Gorillas CEO Kagan Sümer is expected to leave the company he founded as a result of the acquisition. Layoffs are also expected.

Rumors about a possible takeover of Gorillas by a competitor had already been circulating since June of this year: At first, there had been non-binding talks with US competitors Gopuff and Jokr. Since October, Getir has been traded as an interested party. At the beginning of December, Gorillas investor Delivery Hero is also said to have submitted an offer.

The acquisition of Gorillas also shows consolidation in the German delivery services market. At the start of the pandemic, many delivery services had launched, including Gorillas. Now, only Turkey's Getir, U.S. competitor Gopuff and Germany's Unicorn Flink remain.
