Getir probably takes over Gorillas

The market for delivery services continues to consolidate: Gorillas is out of the running. Founder Kagan Sümer has to vacate the executive chair.

There has been speculation about the sale of Gorillas since October, but now it is apparently official: Turkish competitor Getir has taken over the delivery service from Berlin. According to information from the Financial Times the deal was worth 1.2 billion US dollars. This drastically reduced the company's valuation. In September 2021, the valuation was still at three billion US dollars.

The combined company is said to be worth around ten billion US dollars. In March, Getir alone was still worth around 11.8 billion US dollars and has therefore also lost ground. Gorillas CEO Kagan Sümer is to leave the company he founded as a result of the takeover. Redundancies are also expected.

There have been rumors of a possible takeover of Gorillas by a competitor since June of this year: Initially, there had reportedly been non-binding talks with US competitors Gopuff and Jokr. Getir has been traded as an interested party since October. At the beginning of December, Gorillas investor Delivery Hero is also said to have submitted an offer.

The takeover of Gorillas also shows a consolidation in the German market for delivery services. At the beginning of the pandemic, many delivery services were launched, including Gorillas. In the meantime, only Turkish Getir, US competitor Gopuff and German unicorn Flink remain.
