Happy Plant Protein secures 1.8 million euros

The start-up Happy Plant Protein offers a sustainable solution for plant-based proteins and secures 1.8 million euros. The new method reduces energy consumption and targets local producers worldwide
ESPOO, Finland, November 12, 2024 - Finnish foodtech startup Happy Plant Protein has received €1.8 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Nordic Foodtech VC with support from Butterfly Ventures and Business Finland. The funds will be used for the further development and global licensing of the patented technology, which enables the cost-effective and environmentally friendly production of plant proteins.
Innovation for plant protein production
The company, a spin-out of the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, has developed an approach that facilitates the production of protein ingredients with a protein content of 70-80%. The method uses existing extrusion technologies and does not require extensive regulatory approvals. This allows food manufacturers to produce plant-based proteins cost-effectively and locally, eliminating dependence on foreign production facilities.
"There is an urgent need for sustainable methods for the production of high-quality proteins. Our technology significantly reduces production costs by using existing extruder lines and enables even small producers to produce plant-based proteins," explains Jari Karlsson, CEO of Happy Plant Protein.
High protein content with low energy consumption
The technology reduces energy consumption to a seventh of traditional processes, uses almost no water and requires no chemicals. By licensing the technology, Happy Plant Protein aims to promote sustainable and regional food production worldwide.
