Insect food for German pets

With a funding round behind it, Swedish foodtech Petgood is looking to accelerate the transition to the dog and cat food of the future - and is now bringing its insect-based pet food to Germany.
Pet food startup Petgood from Sweden has announced the closing of a €2.5 million seed funding round. The company produces sustainable pet food made from insect proteins. With the funds, Petgood is now expanding into Germany and plans to make further investments in research and development.
Cats and dogs are the most popular pets. In Germany alone, there are a total of 27 million cats and dogs. Pets living in this country eat one million tons of meat each year; in the U.S., animals consume about a quarter of meat production.
"We want all dogs and cats to enjoy the benefits of insect-based pet food - free of antibiotics and benefiting health and the climate," says Petgood founder and CEO Pernilla Westergren.
Analyses by the Technical University of Munich and the German Institute of Food Technology showed both the health and environmental benefits of insect-based pet food over conventional alternatives.
Westergren founded Petgood in 2020, and the startup initially focused on dog food, adding cat food to its range two years later.
