Rainbow Crops Receives €9.7 Million for AI-Driven Development of Climate-Resilient Crops

Following funding from the Gates Foundation, the Belgian agritech startup has secured millions more for its platform designed to develop complex plant traits.

The Belgian agritech company Rainbow Crops has closed an oversubscribed seed funding round of 9.7 million euros. The startup is developing an AI-powered genome editing platform designed to develop complex plant traits much more quickly and precisely than with traditional breeding methods.

The funding comes shortly after a $7 million grant from the Gates Foundation and is intended to drive the expansion of the technology platform as well as the company’s international scaling.

Investors are betting on the future of plant breeding

The seed round was led by the Italian venture capital firm LIFTT together with its investment vehicle LIFTT EuroInvest. In addition, existing investors Agri Investment Fund (AIF), PINC, and VIB participated, as did new investors Corteva via the Corteva Catalyst™ investment platform and Maia Ventures.

The oversubscribed round underscores the growing interest in technologies designed to make agriculture more resilient to climate change, resource scarcity, and rising yield requirements.

AI Meets Genome Editing

At the heart of the technology is the proprietary Trait Foundry™ platform. It combines artificial intelligence, multiplex genome editing, precision breeding, and automated phenotyping.

While traditional breeding methods often take many years to improve complex traits such as yield, drought resistance, or stress tolerance, Rainbow Crops aims to significantly accelerate these processes. Using AI, the platform identifies relevant genetic variants, generates targeted new combinations of genetic traits, and evaluates their effects on key agronomic traits. This enables the systematic development of complex traits influenced by multiple genes simultaneously.

Climate change is increasing pressure on agriculture

The challenges facing plant breeders are growing worldwide. Extreme weather events, rising production costs, and changing regulatory frameworks are increasing the pressure to bring higher-yielding and more resilient varieties to market faster.

By combining AI with modern genome editing, the goal is to develop new plant varieties that deliver higher yields and are better able to cope with climatic stresses.

Initial Successes with Corn

According to the company, the proof-of-concept has already been successfully demonstrated in corn. This provides Rainbow Crops with initial practical evidence that the technology also works in key crops. The new funds will now be used to expand the platform to other crops, build additional datasets, and expand the scientific and technical team.

Europe’s answer to the next generation of plant breeding

For investors, the company’s appeal lies primarily in the combination of artificial intelligence, genome editing, and real-world field validation. Rainbow Crops is also supported by the scientific infrastructure of the Belgian research institute VIB and its collaboration with leading seed companies.

This positions the company as one of the most promising European players in the field of AI-driven plant development. If the technology delivers on its promises, it could significantly accelerate the development of climate-resilient and high-yielding crops—a factor that is becoming increasingly important in light of global challenges to food security.
