The Munich-based robotics company RobCo has reached a valuation of more than one billion U.S. dollars, thereby becoming a unicorn. As part of the transaction, new capital is flowing into the company. At the same time, long-time employees are able to sell a portion of their shares. RobCo has not disclosed details regarding the amount of funding or the total volume of the transaction.

Both existing and new investors are participating in the transaction. Previous investors include Sequoia, Lightspeed, Greenfield, Kindred, Lingotto, and Promus Ventures. New investors include Cherry Ventures and the European Tech Collective, an association of founders of European technology companies.

Valuation Doubles in Nine Months

According to RobCo, the company’s valuation has doubled within nine months and now stands at more than one billion U.S. dollars.

This marks one of the most significant valuation milestones in the startup world for the company, which was founded in Munich in 2020. The press release does not specify exactly how much RobCo was valued at as part of the current transaction.

The transaction consists of at least two components: On the one hand, RobCo is receiving additional capital for further business development. On the other hand, it includes a secondary offering through which long-term employees can sell their existing shares in the company.

This gives team members their first opportunity to realize a portion of the value appreciation that until now had existed only on paper.

“I’m all the more pleased that the people who helped build the company can now also share in its success financially,” explains co-founder and CEO Roman Hölzl.

Alfie is set to take on more complex industrial tasks

The next phase of development will focus on the autonomous industrial robot Alfie.

While RobCo has so far offered modular robotic solutions for industrial automation tasks, Alfie is intended to enable a further step toward autonomous robotics.

According to the company, the system can perceive its environment, derive the necessary actions from that perception, and then execute them independently. This should allow Alfie to be used for unstructured or safety-critical tasks that have been difficult to address with traditional automation solutions.

The market launch is scheduled for March 4, 2027. Alfie is set to be unveiled at the first RobCoN, a summit organized by RobCo in Munich.

Just how capable the system is under real-world industrial conditions—and for which specific processes it will initially be used—should become clear upon its market launch.

AI Is Meant to Act in the Physical World

With Alfie, RobCo is increasingly positioning itself in the field of so-called Physical AI. The goal here is not only to have AI systems process information or generate content, but also to combine their capabilities with machines that autonomously perform tasks in the physical world.

RobCo focuses on industrial applications.

Among others, the company targets manufacturers seeking to increase automation in the face of a skilled labor shortage, cost pressures, and occupational safety requirements. Through a Robotics-as-a-Service model, companies can utilize the robotic solutions without having to bear the full upfront investment costs for the systems.

The U.S. Is Becoming the Most Important Growth Market

In parallel with product development, RobCo is driving its expansion in the U.S. According to the company, the U.S. market is now the fastest-growing region.

RobCo works with customers in more than a dozen states there. The company has production and assembly facilities in Austin, Texas, as well as a laboratory in San Francisco.

CEO Roman Hölzl has also relocated to the U.S. to drive the expansion on the ground.

From a Munich Startup to a Robotics Unicorn

With its billion-dollar valuation, RobCo has reached an important milestone six years after its founding. At the same time, the next challenge is shifting from valuation to scaling the technology.

The company must now demonstrate, in particular, just how widely autonomous systems like Alfie can actually be deployed in industrial production environments. Its growing presence in the U.S. and the additional capital lay the groundwork for this.

Another notable aspect of the current transaction is its secondary component. Instead of raising new capital exclusively, RobCo is enabling long-time employees to monetize a portion of their equity. However, the exact scale of both this equity sale and the new financing remains undisclosed.
