Wingcopter raises $22 million

The Darmstadt-based start-up for delivery drones also announces series production.
In its Series A financing round, the start-up Wingcopter was able to raise 22 million US dollars, the equivalent of almost 18 million euros. The money comes from Xplorer Capital, which has already financed Uber, the Futury Regio Growth Fund, a Hessian growth financing fund, as well as Futury Ventures and Hessen Kapital III.
The money will be used to build up the logistics. One focus is on the delivery of coronavirus vaccines. Wingcopter is working on its first project in Malawi, supported by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The drones can fly up to 120 kilometers. The new company headquarters are also being built in Weiterstadt near Darmstadt, where series production is also due to start. More than 100 employees already work for the start-up. "We are impressed by the Wingcopter team and the speed with which they have developed the product and built up the company," says Xplorer Capital investor Jonathan McQueen.
